We had the good fortune of connecting with Helena Gibson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Helena, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I’d have to say determination. My internal dialogue with myself was always: “Failure is not an option.” I may not be the smartest tool in the shed, but I’m willing to work harder and longer than my competition.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’ve always had big dreams, mainly: providing a life for my daughter where she didn’t miss out on anything; being financially free; and having the free time to be available for her. Well, while we’re at it, throw in some travel, too! It’s been over 2 decades since I was a single mom beginning my entrepreneurial adventure. My second business, Strut Hair Solutions Inc., started in 2002. and we have become the leader in the wig and hair extension space over the past 18 years, growing to 2 locations. Becoming resourceful despite my then lack of experience, resources, and doing whatever it takes to make it happen, was the most helpful thing for me. Even with much criticism (I’m dyslexic), which has caused me to second guess myself and my abilities, I always strove to overcome. My goal with Strut has always been to treat my team well and empower them. They, in turn, will treat our clients to an amazing experience (provide an experience that exceeds the clients’ expectations) which will then lead to referrals and a life-long client. Many of our clients have been with us since the beginning and have become personal friends. I’m most excited about my new product line that I launched during COVID. We have some great hair products, from luxury maintenance shampoos for volumizing your hair, repairing damaged hair, to hair thickening serums. Everyone who has tried the products has raved about them. My team and I are passionate about hair & we appreciate all things that make women feel confident in their own skin. We were established in 2002 with the simple vision of helping women feel good and empowered with themselves and in their appearance.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Great question. I just had a friend visit recently, and I took her to Coronado. We had lunch at Feast & Fairway. They have a great menu with many vegan options. We then drove over the the Hotel Del and walked on the board walk. We sat out at a table in the sand and watched the sunset. It was a great time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My daughter, Layla. I always wanted to set a good example for her, and I always wanted her to be proud of me. As a single mother, it was important to me that she didn’t miss out on anything, because we couldn’t afford it. So, I worked hard to make that possible.
