We had the good fortune of connecting with Gary Hensel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gary, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
It may seem counterintuitive but it has been in the slowing down that I have found the most productivity and success. As a young man I was a workaholic, always trying to prove my worth. My days included long todo list and lots of hours. A health setback taught me to slow down and stay in the moment. My creativity expanded. I moved to an area that had lots of sunshine and warm weather. It gave me the opportunity to be out in nature every day. Meditation, grounding, nature and stillness.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My life has had extreme highs and lows. My last stop in the corporate world was a director of human resources. I then moved into academia for 20 years and was a tenured professor of management and a department chair. I now write and teach masterclasses. I have authored 5 books, the last being a best seller. I have won awards as a teacher, author and social media influencer. I have over 150,000 social media followers from all over the world that I communicate with everyday. It has all been about life lessons.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My son lives in San Diego. There is so much to do. I enjoy whale watching, La Jolla and just exploring the history of the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My lovely wife Virginia has stood by me through the good and bad. I would have never made it through my illness without her.
