We had the good fortune of connecting with Funky Punky and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Funky Punky, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of Funky Punky is never giving up and always remembering why I became a dj/producer. I started djing and producing because I wanted everyone to be able to have an escape from their day-to-day cycle through music and dance. I give people an experience that makes them want to be present in the moment. We all get so caught up in our lives and our routines that we forget to take care of the part of us that needs to release and let go. I encourage people to feel the vibes and to move in a way that makes them happy and lights up their soul.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Not only have I been extremely blessed in finding my passion, it’s in a time and moment in my life where I can follow it with full commitment. I can’t say it’s been the smoothest of roads, but I never wavered in my decision and, as long as I trusted in myself and the universe, I knew I would become the success I am. I believe, the hardest part for me has been more mental, in that it’s a slow process; I dove in, not really knowing anything and learned from scratch (no pun intended, haha). In true faith, I walked away from my psychology degrees and path that provided more ‘security’ to trust a passion that I really couldn’t guarantee would work. As with most people, I wanted more ‘instant gratification’ and that just doesn’t happen in this industry. Fortunately, I have cultivated an amazing network of friends and my family has been my rock, whose support is immeasurable during my time of need. Still, like most, I have those days when I need to hone in, ground myself and give that reminder that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be and be patient. I am moving at the sound of light and I am closer than I know, so I trust the journey. I believe the passion I have for all things music and good vibes is what sets me apart from others. Djing and producing is all a vibe, either you catch it, or you don’t. If you don’t catch it the first time, I’ll try again and, I’m pretty sure I’ll get you. I encourage people to feel the vibes and to move in a way that makes them happy and lights their soul. I’m most excited for the day when I look back, with all my friends and family, and say ‘we did it’…..because WE did. It’s not me, it’s WE. To be able to look back at everything I have gone through to get to where I want to be is going to be a wonderful feeling and I would want to share that feeling with as many people as I can.

If there’s anything anyone can learn from me, I want people to learn that hard-work, dedication, perseverance, love and faith is the key to having a happy and free life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since this obviously going to be the best trip ever, it would only be right to have it sometime during the summer so my best friend can have the full experience of my home, Los Angeles. In the summer time, the weather is perfect and the people are ready to have best time of their life. The weather is impeccable for outside activities like hiking, shopping, hanging out at the beach and seeing all of the immaculate views we have to offer from all over SoCal. My best friend and I would start or end our day with one of my many favorite hikes around SoCal and follow it by eating at somewhere well-earned. Some of the places we would eat at are Tatsu (best ramen EVER), In-N-Out (she’s a tourist and blown away by how simple and good it is) and Little Pine (AMAZING vegan chicken piccata).  Trying out new restaurants is also must! If you can’t tell, my best friend and I are food junkies and love to eat as much as we can.  As you can imagine, the nightlife of a Dj is packed heavy with events and shows, especially in the summer, which means my best friend would be my plus one to each and every event and be able to see what it’s like to be one of the hottest Dj’s in LA.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Where do I even begin? Thank you to my family for supporting me in ways people couldn’t imagine. Thank you to OGKKAI for being the vessel that started ignited the fire for this journey. Thank you Tommy and Shxck Cxty for being a major influence and a tremendous help in the growth of Funky Punky through all things media. And thank you to my best friends and my new found friends for the never-ending love, support and motivation I receive daily. Funky Punky does not exist without all of you!
