We had the good fortune of connecting with Fairplay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fairplay, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The idea of execution. Imagine how much of the technology we use daily would have not existed, had the idea never been executed. Imagine how many songs would have never been written for believing it wasn’t good enough. Imagine all the movies that never would have existed out of fear of being laughed at. Fear of rejection, failure and utter humiliation is often what holds back brilliant ideas. But once the voices in our heads are silenced and we act on our ideas, our visions, it has the power to change the world. It may not succeed right off the bat. And it may fail the first time. But giving up after a few setbacks does nothing. Learn from it. Execute. And grow.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Fairplay is a four piece rock band from San Diego California. Our influences range from Led Zeppelin, Guns N’ Roses, The Pretty Reckless, Deftones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Royal Blood and Paramore. This band came about because Jules and Wil, who have played together in a different band, had a couple great songs and wanted to make something out of it and do it justice. So we hit up our mutual friends Cabelo(drums) and Alyzon Loza(vocals), wrote and arranged the songs, came up with the band name in the studio, put those songs to tape(or in this case into Logic Pro), and released our debut EP, “Broken Seams” in November of 2018. Now, the journey definitely was not an easy one. From the get go, we knew that eventually we would have to find new members as both Alyzon and Cabelo were going to move and being in the band was not going to be a possibility for them. Thankfully, we crossed paths with Marc Polit(drums) in 2019 and Tiffany Gregory(lead vocals) in March of 2020 right as the pandemic hit. With a lineup solidified, we have been writing and finalizing the unrecorded songs before hitting the studio. Some of the songs we have been working on, have been around for years and they are finally coming together. We can’t wait for everyone to hear what we have cooking. Fairplay is an accumulation of all of the influences mentioned above. Music is what we do, and it is what we are. We give 100% to every aspect of being in the band and we have fun doing it! Things, due to the pandemic have been difficult for musicians but we do what we can to make it work. We’re passionate about music and it hopefully shows!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
All spots were enjoyed pre-pandemic. Now we stay at home. Oh man where do we begin?! San Diego is craft beer city. SOOO many places to have a great beer. Modern Times in Point Loma, Saint Archer in Miramar, Black Plague Brewery in Oceanside. You cannot go a mile without coming across some sort of awesome brewery. Let’s not also forget the wonderful year round weather we have. You can visit La Jolla, Sunset Cliffs, Solana Beach, Full Circle Saloon, Mission Bay year round. Balboa Park is always a great spot. Some of our favorite bars and venues(pre pandemic) are Navajo Live, 710 Beach Club, Soda Bar, World Famous Casbah, Shakespeare Pub and Grill, Belly Up Tavern. There is so much to do in San Diego, it is hard to be bored.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Rough. They have been a huge supporter of the band since the beginning, Some of their members have been at our first show, and are always supporting us in any way possible. They are incredible musicians and songwriters and support all sorts of acts in San Diego.
