We had the good fortune of connecting with Evelyn Zuel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evelyn, what role has risk played in your life or career?
In my younger years I was certainly not risk averse, and age has brought with it more to lose, however I certainly believe that in order to grow and evolve as a person it requires continually taking risks throughout life. Staying in the safe and comfortable zone tends to breed complacency. Each risk that I have taken in my career has helped me to be more confidence and realize what I am capable of. The first big risk I took was taking the unconventional route and getting an arts degree, no one ever told me about the instability that entrepreneurship can bring, filing taxes as a self-employed person, or the hard reality of how hard it is to sell yourself to potential clients, but with boots on the ground I slowly developed the language and skill set to do so. I opened a store in March of 2020. Yep, the month that lockdowns were initiated. With $24,000 in credit card debt and a full store of products that no one could come in to purchase that meant pivoting to online sales asap. It was difficult of course but also incredibly rewarding by way of pushing through, offering support to the community, and showing others that even though life throws you curve balls there is always a way out. By the end of 2020 I had paid off that debt and had become a main stop for tourists rolling through to Joshua Tree National Park. The shop is no longer open, the space was only available for a short amount of time but I don’t regret taking that massive risk as it opened me up to the community in an impactful way.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am actually quite proud of the little things that I accomplish on a daily basis. Owning my own business while also navigating mental / menstrual health has put me in a position where I am able to determine for myself where and how I focus my energy. Sometimes mental blocks take over so strongly that just sending that one email is a win for the day. My clients certainly are what motivates me regularly and by maintaining a stance where I put my health first it seems to give others permission to do the same.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh I love putting together an itinerary! If a friend were coming to visit for a week, the days would probably be packed: first, we would go to brunch at Country Kitchen, then go check out Noah Purifoy’s outdoor art park, grab a beverage from The Tiny Pony, then go back to my place to watch the stars in the hot tub. There would be hiking every day either in the morning or during sunset (it is HOT here in the desert this time of year), and certainly a trip to La Copine – one of my favorite restaurants ever.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m forever grateful for all my teachers that I have had throughout the years who taught me the art of astrology.
