Meet Ethan Avanzino | Co-Owner, Wanderoo Lodge & Gravel Bar

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ethan Avanzino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ethan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind our success is inclusivity and authenticity. We’ve built a space where all are welcome—except assholes. This mentality has created an environment where people from all walks of life can come together, connect, and learn from one another. We don’t tolerate bigotry, and we don’t cater to those who bring negativity into our space. By fostering a community based on respect, openness, and a little bit of sass, we’ve made Wanderoo Lodge & Gravel Bar more than just a place to stay or grab a drink—it’s a place where people feel truly at home.

What should our readers know about your business?
We’re a queer-owned business—a married couple (one gay transgender man, one gay cisgender man) running a bar and lodge in Arkansas. Not a gay bar, but a bar owned by gay people.
Our journey started in the chaos of 2020, when COVID led us to a 600-square-foot cabin in Eureka Springs. By the end of that summer, we knew that if we wanted to stay in this town we loved, we needed to carve out our own place in the hospitality industry. When Wanderoo Lodge & Gravel Bar went up for sale, we took a leap of faith. We had no experience running a motel or a bar, but we knew we were resilient, creative, and a damn good team—so we made it happen.
Eureka Springs is a magical town of just 2,200 people, a place long known for its inclusivity and welcoming spirit. We see ourselves as stewards of that legacy, creating a space where people from all walks of life come together, let their walls down, and—sometimes without even realizing it—open their minds. We’ve witnessed firsthand how a simple weekend here can change perspectives. We’ve had people walk onto our property with closed, bigoted mindsets and leave with a newfound understanding of the human experience—and a deeper appreciation for the LGBTQ+ community.
What sets us apart? Authenticity. We don’t just run a business; we’ve built a place where people can truly connect, grow, and celebrate what makes us all human.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting, we’d start each morning with coffee at BREWS before grabbing breakfast at Three Bird Cafe, where Jen and Rayna—one running the kitchen, the other running the front—make sure every meal is incredible. For lunch, we’d visit Harold’s Diner & FARMacy, both serving up fresh, delicious food in a laid-back atmosphere. Dinner would be at Spring on Main, where Kolin is always there ensuring an unforgettable dining experience, followed by drinks at Missy’s White Rabbit, where Missy herself is always there, making everyone feel like a regular.
During the days, we’d get out in nature—kayaking on a local lake or river and hiking at Lake Leatherwood, taking in the stunning Ozark scenery. Evenings would be for live music, whether catching a concert at The Aud or popping into one of the many local bars in town that feature talented musicians.
The best part about all of these spots? They’re all locally owned and operated. There’s no big corporate chain here—just passionate people creating amazing experiences. When you stop in, you’re chatting with the owners, shaking hands with the people who make this town special. And with so much to explore—from outdoor adventures to eclectic shopping—every day in Eureka Springs is a new adventure.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my mom for raising me the best way she knew how, with the knowledge and understanding available at the time. We didn’t have a word for transgender back then, but that didn’t stop her from letting me be myself. She never tried to force me into a box—just let me exist as I was. Her love and openness, even without all the language we have today, made all the difference.
