We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Vollrath and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emma, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
I don’t think people realize how much thought goes into making a single piece of clothing. Until you actually are making your own designs, you don’t notice all the little things that go into taking them from the sketch to the final product. From picking fabrics, to taking measurements for different sizes, picking the right thread and stitching method, and then putting it all together… it’s a process. It’s fun being on the other side of it and then seeing your designs come to life on someone else!

What should our readers know about your business?
Emma Lou is an innovative athleisure brand using [proprietary], recycled, sweat-enhancing fabrics to beat bloat, decrease water weight retention, and support women in overcoming lower stomach insecurities. Up until now, women have been relegated to concealing lower stomach bloating with conventional waist trainers or by taking expensive, unregulated fat loss supplements that don’t work.

We’re taking a different approach, designing a waistband that uses our [patent-pending]  textile technology to get to the root of the problem. Our recycled thermoplastic fabric is designed with insulating property which traps heat and safely increases body temperature which enhances body sweat.

Infusing technology into textile was my goal from the beginning to create clothing that was working for you, not just with you. After hearing so many women during sessions express their concerns with their lower stomachs, I knew I could do something to help them, even if I started with 0 business experience or connections in the industry. I just decided to start and figure things out as I go (even if that meant Googling everything). Once you decide you want to do something, go for it!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have been in the Orange County area for about a year, and as a transfer from LA, I really can appreciate how beautiful OC is. I am still trying out new spots and areas, but whenever people come to visit, we always start in Laguna Beach. Woods Cove is one of my favorite private beaches and even better when you grab lunch at Orange Inn about a block away. After a day at the beach, we would grab dinner at Javier’s and then head out to Newport Beach and hit up some of the bars. The next day, a beachside brunch and pilates class.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a few books I highly recommend to read before, or during your entrepreneurial journey. The first one would be The Power of One More by Ed Mylett, which is such a great resource if you are lacking motivation or self-belief. If you are looking for more of a story, I’d opt for Creativity Inc. by Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar, who shares some of his great business and creative philosophies. Lastly, Start with Why by Simon Sinek was another great read to find your “why” and then execute it with action.
