We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Tracy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emma, is there something you believe many others might not?
I have read and heard the phrase “if you love your job you never work a day in your life” or something along those lines countless times. I used to read it to myself with pride. I was proud that I had arrived at my dream job in life, running the business all on my own. Then one day I heard somewhere that that phrase was a lie. I realized then the danger of that phrase and what it can lead to. Believing that phrase is a significant reason I typically stopped what I was doing or filled any free time with the tasks, studying, calls, emailing, etc I felt would help my business grow. Already a freelancer is going to feel the pressure of knowing it’s their job to make sure they have a job each day they get out of bed in the morning. Already there is the pressure to be a ‘workaholic’. So when that person is made to feel that they shouldn’t view what they are doing as trying or draining or hard, they can quickly feel invalidated or pushed to poorly balance their work and life. I am more aware now of my choice of words when talking to fellow photographers or others who are self-employed.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am most proud of my work if the emotions are able to be felt forever through the photos. I want anyone looking at it to picture being there with ease. I’ve learned over the years that there is a balance between posing and prompting. Too much posing prevents true personalities and moments from happening with the clients, and too little prompting makes them feel awkward in front of the camera.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Revolution Roasters in Oceanside is my favorite local coffee shop. I also love High Low in front of the Oceanside Pier for breakfast, and Mr. Bibbi around the corner for lunch. I would also show them Tamarack Beach, with the stunning cliffs. North Coast Church is also an amazing place to introduce anyone to.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout the wedding photographer community as a whole! It can feel like one big family, full of plenty of people ready to help, support, and encourage. There are facebook groups, education accounts, workshops both online and in person, and many other resources that can help an individual build their business past the beginner stage.
