Meet Emma Rose Rowell (Emmursss) | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Rose Rowell (Emmursss) and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emmursss, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Since I was a little girl I have always loved every form of self-expression that I could explore, and creativity for me was intrinsically connected with the way I went about understanding myself. Beyond the many arts and crafts projects I did when I was young, one of my first substantial connections to self expression and creativity was through makeup. My grandmother came from a modeling background, which had influenced my mom’s understanding of makeup and clothing as she was growing up. My mom had studied musical theater and the arts, and presented makeup to me as something to play and experiment with. I immediately fell in love with creating different ‘characters’ or iterations of myself through makeup and fashion, and changing the way I looked to explore different facets of my personality.
Over time, I became obsessed with any form of creative expression I could find, going from makeup and fashion to writing poetry pieces and learning multiple instruments, but drawing and creating characters was something I kept coming back to. The ability to create intricate worlds and storylines through drawings was so fascinating to me, and something I thought could be best explored through digital media. My background is in communications and women’s studies, andso creating my art was something that allowed me to use both of these tools. Using my understanding of how to build a brand through digital media and marketing, I paired this with my knowledge of women’s issues focusing much of my art on subtle feminist messaging around femme friendships, confidence, and women’s sensuality. It’s very important to me that I create a space for others to find themselves through creative expression, and see themselves reflected in my art, and that’s why I’ve created Emmursss’ World.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m currently working on a number of different collections including “Girltopia,” “Blair Bunny & Friends,” and “If You Look Close Enough.” Much of my art comes from personal experience, and reflects being a woman in today’s society– but before any deeper meaning comes into play, ultimately, I want my pieces to celebrate women having fun, enjoying the presence of their friends, and embracing everything about themselves. I identify the things that make me personally feel empowered, and embed them into my work; through my characters, their clothing, the song choices I include in my social posts, and their narratives I create– everything is intentional. It took a lot of patience and persistence for me to ‘uncover’ my artistic voice and style, and to create Emmursss’ World, but it’s something I’m very passionate about, and am looking forward to building on.
I’m someone who constantly changes, and I really embrace that aspect of myself. Just as I change, I created Emmursss’ World with the intention of it growing into something larger over time, and I’m slowly working towards that goal. I’m excited to move into a more mixed-media space, bringing to life the digital characters I’ve created through other mediums, sharing new content with my audience and connecting with them in different ways, as well as building a larger community with my art. I have a lot of exciting things planned and more to share with my art., I’m looking forward to people hopefully resonating with my work, and hope that it encourages others to explore their own creative expression and to exist as freely as possible.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m located in San Diego county, something that is reflected in different pieces of mine. I love to highlight local businesses and digitize them into the world of Blair Bunny, one of my focal characters (despite the fact that she lives in my fictionalized version of Paris). Two of the locations seen in my work so far are The Strawberry Shack in Carlsbad Village, and Boom Boom Brazil in downtown Oceanside, both of which feature the cutest front displays and made for perfect summer places for Blair to visit– also making them my first recommendation for a friend visiting the area!
The Strawberry Shack features every strawberry-flavored dessert you could think of, from strawberry dole whip (one of my personal favorites), to strawberry juice and strawberry key lime pie, and even strawberry fudge. After grabbing your treat of choice, I would recommend heading to Boom Boom Brazil to grab a new summer suit since you’re right by the beach! A couple of other locations I’m excited to bring to life through my artwork include Banana Dang and The Star Theatre in Oceanside, as well as Belmont Park and Wolfie’s Carousel Bar in San Diego. The Hotel Del on Coronado Island is also a really beautiful place and the perfect place to visit during the holidays. There are so many unique places spread all over San Diego county, and I think that’s one of the things that makes it so special– all of the different businesses and experiences there are to explore.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to thank my mom and dedicate this to her. My mom was my first example of what it means to be a strong woman and to not conform to any societal pressures or standards of what that means. She instilled in me the ability and importance of advocating for myself, being openly passionate about things that matter to me, and existing freely.
Both her and my dad encouraged me to pursue anything I wanted to, and gave me the freedom to express myself through my physical space, my outward appearance, and creative pursuits. I’m so lucky to have parents who have given me the space and freedom to explore myself, and want to encourage anyone reading this to do the same for the people they love.
