We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Shipp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business was an easy decision! After having my son in 2018, I knew that an office job was going to be challenging due to scheduling and childcare issues.
Working for myself, on my terms, with a schedule I could generally control was the solution! I’m also lucky that my skillset is very well suited for remote work, and that I already had experience freelancing.
By starting my own business, I gave myself the freedom to set my own terms for how I wanted to work. I love managing my own schedule, client relations, and having creative control over the work I put out.
What should our readers know about your business?
Social Graces is a content subscription service for small businesses looking to up their social media game. I provide content strategy and custom, on-brand posts for my clients, so they can spend their time running their business!
I started Social Graces after mainly working for myself for around 10 years doing graphic design for a handful of clients that I’ve worked with for years. Shifting to a social media specialty has been an amazing move for me. I’m very type A for a designer, and the strategy, scheduling, and metrics of social media really lets me blend quantitative, numbers-based work with qualitative design work.
Living all over the world (previous locations include Guam and Pensacola, Florida) has helped me grow a great network of clients and associates, many of whom are military spouses like me. I’ve been able to grow my business through referrals and now have a very full schedule!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Imperial Beach, so we’d start there with breakfast at Arandas Café. Next, we’d go up the Silver Strand and paddle board under the Coronado Bay Bridge, and follow that with lunch at the sushi bar at Saiko Sushi in Coronado!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to credit my husband Kyle, who is always so supportive of my endeavors!
