Meet Ellie Mendez | Mom & Baker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ellie Mendez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ellie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’m a very big crafty snd DIY kind of person, I always feel like if I see something I can make it and I’ve always been interested in baking/decorating and I had always done treats for friends/family so after my first son’s second birthday in 2018 I thought, “I can do this, how hard can it be?” Not realizing how hard it would actually be. Now doing this full time as a mom of two is difficult but rewarding as I get to stay home with my 4 month old.

What should our readers know about your business?
I feel like there are so many businesses who do what I do but in no way do I feel any of us are competing. I love focusing on the details of a theme/color scheme that a client asks for and being able to bring it to life. Trying to run a business with ADHD has been extremely difficult as I can forget to order supplies on time or procrastinate but my New Year’s resolution was to get it together this year so starting a website through Bakesy has definitely help. Managing my ADHD while managing my life as a mother and small business owner is a struggle but with the help of my husband and mon I am getting there. I’ve learned to not be so hard on myself as I am my worst critic, also to slow down and take a breath because I can be in a zone and kind of forget about my surroundings. I got to where I am in my business thanks to friends/family who trusted me in the beginning and in turn refer me to their friends and family. I’d like the world to know how much I love creating and bringing designs/concepts to life and I’m grateful because thanks to my clients I am able to do what I love while also staying home with my children.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The first place would be HiroNori on Atlantic Ave. the absolute BEST vegan ramen and portions are great. I’d definitely take them to the Aquarium of the Pacific which is one of my favorite places, then shopping at the Pike and drinks at The Blind Donkey, super fun while somehow being chill. As a Long Beach native the city has changed throughout the years but Hamburger Mary’s would be a stop as well as a trip to Shoreline Village for Cajun food and a funnel cake.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to my family, in particular to my oldest son who’s name inspired my business, my 4 month old who keeps me balanced, my mom who has been an amazing help and my husband who’s my #1 supporter.
