We had the good fortune of connecting with Elle Baez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elle, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Hi! I’m Elle Baez and I am an independent singer-songwriter. I started my own music business because I love to sing and perform. I was doing this through other people’s channels- such as performing in shows with characters written for me or singing covers. But I love to write my own music. Instead of waiting for a record company to invest in me, I decided to invest in myself. Little did I know I would really be starting an entire business on my own. But now, here I am. A full-time business women and I love what I do!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My music is my art. Not only is it the songs but it’s their message to the world. I make body positive and self-love music to motivate people to feel comfortable in their skin. I also make it a priority to make my music real and raw. I want to be representation for other little girls who never had someone to look up to. I know growing up, if I had seen a plus-size Latina singer in the industry, I would have felt seen. I would have felt like I belonged. I had to go on my self-love journey first before I could spread it to others. And now I am here and inspiring them to love themselves, as they SHOULD! I had so many people tell me in the industry that I wouldn’t be taken seriously because I didn’t have the “look” or that I had to change myself in order to have success. Now, I am breaking those barriers. Just like my song “Stereotype” says I’m #NotYourStereotype. I’m the most proud of being able to make motivational music videos and teaming up with big size-inclusive brands like “Adore Me” to help me execute the vision and spread awareness!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was coming to NYC, I would take them to a music venue for sure. Probably Rockwood Music Hall or Elsewhere in Brooklyn. We’d do a fun brunch during that day at “Sundays in Brooklyn”. We’d definitely hit up my favorite taco spot “St. Marks Taqueria” for margs & tacos at dinner time! If we can fit it in I would stop by my favorite plus size vintage store “PLUS BKLYN”. And top the night off dancing at Le Bain Rooftop.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout has to go to my parents, Virginia and Ricardo. My parents have been there since day one and I was singing at age 3. They immediately enrolled me in lessons and built up my education in music. Not only music, but encouraged me to learn about business and get a college degree at a top school. I was able to graduate from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and feel equipped to build my entire business on my own with my talents and knowledge. My parents have given me so much time and belief. They haven’t doubted me or my path once. My dad immigrated to America from the Dominican Republic as a child and has shown me exactly what hard work and perseverance can accomplish!
