We had the good fortune of connecting with Eduardo Cordova and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eduardo, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have never envisioned myself doing anything other than creating art. Some people in this world decided their careers at the age of 18; I remember being 10 years old and playing with my parents’ camera. I loved looking at old photos in family albums. From a very young age, I knew I had to be a photographer or filmmaker, but undoubtedly, I would be working behind the camera, telling stories. Besides, my greatest inspiration is cinema, as I mentioned before. Watching great artists like Emmanuel Lubezki or young film directors like Xavier Dolan work and connect with many people through powerful images led me to satisfy my need to be an artist.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a photographer, I have a quite distinctive style, as I focus a lot on capturing the intimacy and emotions of the person I’m photographing. I like to capture the essence, the vibe, and everything the person feels right at the moment of the photo.

It has been a long journey to find my style. I’ve gone through various attempts, from very cold photographs and street photography to architectural and real estate photography. I’ve undergone several introspective processes to understand what I truly wanted to express through my photography, drawing inspiration primarily from cinema. Artists like Emmanuel Lubezki, Andre Turpin, or Xavier Dolan have, in a way, educated me to tell stories with images. Observing these artists’ work, and studying their techniques, and methods has greatly helped me to experiment and learn.

Being a photographer is a beautifully challenging profession. I believe there is something powerful in being able to take your camera, point it, and capture something that resonates with people. However, it has not been an easy path because you often encounter individuals who do not value or understand how one can make a living from this. Many see it more as a hobby than a real job, leading to situations where people are reluctant to pay for your work.

Nevertheless, over time, you learn to accept both objective and subjective criticism. One of the significant lessons I’ve learned is that it’s okay to make mistakes; what matters is learning from them. Many times, by experimenting with new techniques or not practicing beforehand, I’ve had sessions that left me less satisfied. Another thing I’ve learned is undoubtedly how to appreciate my work and art, knowing when it has value and when to charge for it. This aspect has been particularly challenging, but it has been achieved with much effort.

I want people who encounter my art and work to recognize its value just by seeing it. It may sound ambitious, I know, but my work must speak for itself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would organize a charming trip at Tijuana. We would start with a delicious breakfast at Folklore, followed by a stroll through the city center. We’d explore passages and alleys, visiting vintage shops to immerse ourselves in the authenticity of the place. We would conclude the day with a stop at Insurgente Brewery to enjoy a craft beer.

If the trip extends into the weekend, on the following day, we would head to Valle de Guadalupe, specifically to Santo Tomás, La Lomita, and Eclectico Guadalupe, to savor the finest wines and experience the unparalleled atmosphere of Valle de Guadalupe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to my family and friends; they have always been my support through ups and downs. To my friends who inspire me to become a better person and above all, to my partner who is the best assistant in the world.
