We had the good fortune of connecting with DWJ and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DWJ, why did you pursue a creative career?

I had always known that my PURPOSE is writing. I wish I could explain why I was even trying to pursue a career in law when I knew what I wanted to do with my life. Perhaps the whole enchilada of ‘practicality’ that was shoved down my throat by the society? After giving it a few precious years I walked away from a semi established career as a paralegal  and decided to travel. In my version of Eat Pray Love amongst other things I was re-acquainted with the art of living in the moment and my one true love, writing!

I had begun writing when I was much younger as a way to hide my feelings I hide in my poems. I guess I sought a certain sense of pleasure in remaining a sphinxlike misfit. It went from writing about my own feelings left unheard to observing the way people misunderstood each other and the things left unsaid. I started with writing short poems to longer stories to eventually writing anything and everything I wanted to say almost fearlessly. The power, the drive, the high that I got from writing was unmatched. It was liberating. It was an escape, and a doorway to a world that I created. Writing made me detach from the things that weighed me down whilst I penned a line that annihilated me (in a good way, if that makes sense).

If you’re wondering why of all the things did I decide to start a food porn blog – Tickle That Tongue. Well, from the few years that I have spent on this curious planet of ours I have learnt that us humans prioritize two things above all – 1. Good food 2. Orgasms. So there I go attempting to combine two of the greatest pleasures in the world with my art. While that is heavily for the consumers’ consumption, personally, it is also a way to express my sexuality and sneak out of the closet a little by little (Ssshhhh!)

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I am at the very beginning stages and am trying to figure out what does and doesn’t work. There is a lot of room to grow. I think what sets me apart from others is my “why not” mentality and saying yes to things. Honestly, that is how I have lived some of the best days of my life. In the near future I will be launching a line of sex toys that look like food (picture a giant vibrating strawberry I guess.. or a little one .. satiating that carnal hunger..is the strawberry wild or are you?) under my brand Tickle That Tongue. I am excited to say that I get to help women around the world to get to the climax ‘cause god am I familiar with the struggle. I also wish to bring a sense of comfort to my people to express their sexuality more freely and to not have to curb their desires and as our beloved Samantha Jones once said “I will not be judged by you or society…”

One of the challenges that I face is staying disciplined and not breaking out of a writer’s block quickly enough. Another one that I encounter is not having enough funding to grow at the pace that I would like to but we’re working on that. While these ventures are under construction at the moment I am sure we are gonna launch soon with a bang! I am proud that I had the courage to walk away from a job that though paid my bills, I did not like. Quitting that job helped me reconnect with my self. I even dove back in to writing and I am working to grow it into something more. I hope to inspire people to follow their dreams even when it seems gnarly. I hope that my people don’t get discouraged by someone else’s ‘that’s not how it works’.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am taking them to the airport and we are going to Spain and hopefully it’s close to La Tomatina festival in Bunõl. Umhh for food gambas al ajillo, paella, sangria etc. Next stop. Ibiza? Definitely watching a soccer match too!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I believe I had just graduated high school then and I wrote a rather improper email to the editor of MensXP at that time, Namrata Nongpiur. Though I am thankful, I still wonder why she responded. I am glad she took a chance on my under experienced arse and offered me a fulfilling internship with her team.

My parents deserve this shoutout for trying their best to support me in any way they could even when they could not.

I had signed up for the Writing Drama course with Nicholas McInerny at Oxford University. I learnt a great deal from him and am thankful for the wealth of knowledge he had shared during the course.
