Meet Duranne Collins | Outdoor Space Designer & Garden Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Duranne Collins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Duranne, how do you think about risk?
I am convinced that uncertainty is an inherent aspect of life’s journey, yet many individuals fail to recognize this reality. Achievement is intertwined with risk; without it, opportunities are lost.
The notion that one should delay their dreams, waiting for a larger safety net of savings, or positing the need to acquire additional knowledge before launching a venture, is misleading. The pursuit of a completely secure financial situation or absolute preparedness is elusive.
The hard truth? Sufficiency in funds or expertise for beginning a business is a mirage—the landscape of knowledge is forever expanding.
Instead of seeking excuses, take the leap. Action begets progress, and life favors the bold.
Just get out there and do it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It might surprise you, but I consider landscape designers to be artists!
Our canvas includes a variety of soils and fertilizers (like vermicompost), and we use an array of vibrant flowers, trees, shrubs, complimented by water features and fire elements as our palette.
Like artists who analyze color relationships, we study scientific data to discern what plants complement each other, understanding the nuances of soil pH and hydration requirements.
With over three decades of experience cultivating soil and greenery, I’ve certainly experienced my fair share of mishaps! On one occasion, after arranging all the landscaping details and plant selections for a client, I discovered that their soil was pure clay—a very costly oversight. Since then, I’ve made it a point to examine my clients’ soil thoroughly before finalizing my landscape designs to prevent recommending unsuitable plants.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d bring my friend to the majestic cliffs of Big Corona in Corona Del Mar, where we could soak in the expansive ocean vista, observe the bustling entrance to Newport Harbor, and admire the picturesque landscape with its rocky borders and elegant homes.
Next, we’d explore Rogers Gardens in Corona Del Mar, delighting in the array of exquisite plants, perusing the charming gift shop, and finally, enjoying a meal at the on-site Farmhouse restaurant.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My initial inspiration for gardening sprang from reading Organic Gardening Magazine and Mother Earth News Magazine over 30 years ago. They provided the foundation for my approach to organic and natural gardening practices.
Moreover, I must express deep appreciation for my mentor, Dahlia Runner from Dahlia’s Herbal Delights and Garden Design, a fellow landscape designer. Her guidance has been invaluable in steering me through the realm of landscaping. She’s not only an exceptional professional but also a wonderful friend, and I’m deeply thankful for her support.
