Meet Dr. Maria Teresa Orozco | Academic Coach for first-generations students & professionals

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Maria Teresa Orozco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Maria Teresa, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
My name is Dr. Maria Teresa Orozco, and I hold a doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy. As a proud first-generation daughter of Mexican immigrants, I started my coaching business to empower first-generation students on their academic and professional journeys, which is something I wish I had during my educational journey. I aim for academic and professional success through coaching, community support, and self-development.
I provide women with the tools and strategies to overcome challenges such as imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and the lack of guidance. Many first-generation individuals navigate their academic and career paths without role models, and my programs provide invaluable mentorship and advice in a nurturing environment for growth.
I help women develop essential study skills, cultivate confidence, and set boundaries, making higher education and career advancement more attainable. Through group coaching, journaling, and goal-setting strategies, I assist women in achieving clarity, confidence, and success in their personal and professional lives.
In the next few weeks, I am launching a membership program for self-development, connection, and support, ensuring no one feels alone. By uplifting first-generation Latinas, my business creates a powerful ripple effect of success, where empowered women transform their lives, inspire others, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My coaching business empowers first-generation Latinas with the tools and support they need to excel academically and professionally. As a first-generation Latina, I understand the unique challenges of navigating higher education and career paths without guidance. What sets my business apart is its personal and mission-driven approach. I’ve faced struggles similar to my clients—nearly quitting school, battling self-doubt, and feeling out of place. I know how to push forward, gain confidence, and succeed. My coaching helps women rewrite their narratives and claim the success they deserve.
Building my business has been challenging, from gaining credibility to reaching my audience. Yet, I’ve learned that even small impacts matter. If I can help one woman feel seen and empowered, I’m fulfilling my mission. First-generation Latinas are decisive, capable, and deserving of success. My business is here to remind them of that, equipping them with strategies to thrive and create a ripple effect of success for future generations. That’s the essence of my brand.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting for a week, I would ensure they experienced a mix of culture, food, relaxation, adventure, and fun. We would start with a delicious Mexican breakfast of chilaquiles and café de olla and explore a local Mercado. We would also visit an evening of good food and margaritas at Calaveras (Kalaveras) in Silver Lake.
A day at Disneyland would be filled with rides, churros, and fireworks. We would also visit Mi Tierra Café to savor a cafecito and pan dulce before heading to the airport—an ideal end to a week filled with memories, laughter, and connection.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success stems from the struggles I faced as a woman with a physical disability (Spinal Muscular Atrophy, SMA Type 2). My family has always been a tremendous support system. My mother, Teresa, is my rock; she taught me that hard work pays off and has always been by my side.
