We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorothy Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dorothy, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to move from sitting behind a laptop all day to steeping deep in scent, color and texture when the grind became too much of a grind, and I no longer looked forward to my day. Creating bath treats let my inner child out to play, heightening all my senses and rolling out something that little and big people alike could add to their self care routine. It’s easy, and tangible.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Bubble Box is still in the infant stage. I got serious as a business in 2018. My very first show was in 2019, then the pandemic hit and it all went wacky. Interestingly enough, folks got real about what downtime meant to them. I had requests for self care boxes. and found people were taking better care of their mental, physical and emotional health. I do my best to make products that I love, and think others will love, while using eco friendly packaging, the best ingredients, and keeping price points reasonable so everyone can enjoy or gift something little and luxurious that pampers and soothes. When I’m in the studio mixing color and scent, I’m creating an experience for someone out there. Someone is going to retreat to their bathtub or shower, use a bubble bomb or bar of soap and give themselves time to stop and relax. Breathe deep, soak and close their eyes. That’s why I do, what I do. I love making self care for others.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Anytime friends visit, we take them to the forest, or the beach. The redwoods are sanctuary. The ocean, a need. Being surrounded my nature is a blessing in a hundred ways. In Santa Cruz county, we’re so lucky to have incredible craft food and drink. Whether it’s a walk in Nisene Marks state park, or sitting on a sandy cove in East Cliff, followed by cocktails and light nosh at Venus Spirits, or a nice dinner at Jack O’Neill restaurant on the beach, the options for both nature and food are endless.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My biggest cheerleaders are my darling husband. Brian, and my gal pals called The Quarters.(not pennies) Brian has been my solid while I took time to figure out how Bubble Box was going to roll out. He built me a soap studio and told me to go for it. So I went for it! I’ve got the best group of friends who are my trusty testers anytime I roll out a new product.
