We had the good fortune of connecting with Diana Delzio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diana, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve always been an animal lover. When I was eight years old, I learned that a hamburger was really a cow. At that moment, I became a vegetarian. Loving animals, especially dogs, has been a huge part of my life, and I grew up always having a dog (thanks Mom and Dad!). When Mr. Harrison Doodle, our gorgeous Australian Labradoodle, came into our lives, my husband and I found that he was getting ‘lost’ in our own backyard at night. We needed a solution. Living in San Diego is the best place in the world, and we are so fortunate to be here. Unfortunately, if you are a pet parent and in San Diego, you’ve heard the horror stories of pets getting attacked by coyotes in very populated suburban areas. It seemed to be that the coyotes only came out during the night, but now we see them during the day. I love coyotes, but I don’t want them messing with my pups. Thus came the idea to light-up my labradoodle at night with a glow collar. Since he is huge but it’s so dark at night, it’s easy to lose track of him, even in our own backyard, so every night we illuminate him and our cute yorkie, Lala, with glow collars. Since dogs are hard to see at night, and San Diego is so pet friendly, this is how my company and its mission was born: to keep pets safe in the evenings with glow.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am most excited about how many customers have supported my small business. Each pet I see in Electric Lala Land’s safety glow makes my heart happy. It’s been a long journey of figuring out how to legally become a business: getting my LLC, joining local San Diego farmers markets, becoming an instagram seller, and helping customers find what safety light-up product will work best for their specific pet and unique needs. I am so proud and excited that we have had pets from dogs and cats to turtles and bearded dragons use our light-up safety accessories.
I also have a newfound appreciation for fellow small business owners, especially those like myself who do not have the means to hire a team yet. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes, much more than I initially thought there would be. The greatest lesson that I have learned so far is to be flexible. Even when I fall in love with a business idea, I now realize that it may or may not work the first time around. It may work the first time, it may work the seventh time or it may work the hundredth time. I’ve learned through this process that if you have a passion, follow it! Follow it, even more when it gets harder. Never giving up is one of the biggest secrets to running a successful small business. As I grow and learn more, my business grows and becomes better with each passing year.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego is a paradise. With warm weather year round, it’s pretty much just “another beautiful day” and there is plenty to do and see. A few favorite places to eat include Lucha Libre Taco Shop, The Lion’s Share Restaurant, Bali Hai Restaurant, Bronx Pizza, Peohe’s Restaurant, Davanti Enoteca Restaurant, Cucina Enoteca Del Mar and In N Out Burger. A few favorite sights to see include Balboa Park, Hotel Del Coronado, the Spruce Street Suspension Bridge, The World Famous San Diego Zoo, The La Jolla Cove Sea Lions, Cabrillo National Monument, Little Italy, Old Town and Cowles Mountain.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Electric Lala Land’s supporters and puptomers are whom we’d like to thank first and foremost. Their support has helped make our dream a reality. We’d also like to give a shoutout to all the local San Diego farmer’s market coordinators for providing a safe, fun and diverse physical space for Electric Lala Land to thrive. Because of them we are able to meet with our customers in person on a weekly basis.
