Meet Devin Hesketh | Tattoo Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Devin Hesketh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devin, what do you attribute your success to?
There are so many different perceptions of success. Some people believe success is becoming very wealthy. Others think it is having the respect of all your peers. And then others believe it is popularity and public recognition.
I am a firm believer that none of these are actual success, but rather the results of success.
I think the best way to describe true success is a deep personal satisfaction with the achievements you’ve made, and a continuing drive to follow on that upward path.
When passion for the project and growth are the primary focus, the aforementioned results of success will fall into place in good time.
I believe that keeping focus on the heart of my business, my art, and pouring myself into that is the only way to have true success. Knowing at the end of the day that I did my best and made someone feel better about themselves is success. Money, popularity, and respect just follow along. As soon as your focus is off your passion, you will lose it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started tattooing about 4 years ago and had no idea that it would quickly turn from a thought, to an interest, to a job, and finally a lifestyle. It is something that has given me purpose and passion, that I haven’t found anywhere else. It was a difficult road to get to where I am now, but looking back I realize that each step has been so rewarding, and I’m grateful.
I believe my art sets itself apart from others because I have a good understanding of light, depth, and contrast from my experience as a photographer. I have had a camera in my hands since I was a young boy, and have always found passion in that as well. Taking those skills and applying them to tattooing has given me a unique style, and even the ability to often use my own photography as references for the tattoos I create.
I want people to be able to look at one of my art pieces, and know that it was done by Devin Hesketh, but even more so, I want to be able to look at that same piece and appreciate every bit of effort I put into it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I would definitely take them to the Calgary Zoo, since it’s one of my favourite places in the city. I would also take them about an hour away to the edge of the Rocky Mountains, since there is nothing quite as majestic. We would grab a slice of pizza from Seniore’s Pizza on the way back, and probably wind up in my favourite neighborhood, Inglewood, where I have the pleasure of working, to grab a drink at one of the many, great watering holes there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my mentor, Ashlee Rasovic, for always being a great teacher, friend, and human being in general. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you.
