Meet Devin Dugan | Owner & Artistic Director of ImprovCity

We had the good fortune of connecting with Devin Dugan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devin, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
That anyone can do improv. Kids, teens, adults, seniors. Doesn’t matter. Improv and the life skills it teaches lends itself to everyone.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a professional improviser, I’ve had so many opportunities to perform all over the country and with some amazing troupes. The friendships I have made are lifelong and each dear to me. I knew I always wanted to do something comedy related, and through a series of luck and a little hard work, I now get to do what I love every day. It wasn’t always easy, and like any business we’ve had our ups and downs, people have come and gone, and we even had to survive a pandemic, but we did it. Knowing how to adapt and roll with the punches – or improvise if you will – has been a great tool in helping to handle any and all situations that have arisen over the years. Now we are the largest, most successful improv troupe in Orange County, CA and we’re still growing.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d take them to the area around our theater in Old Town Tustin. There are so many great restaurants all within a one to two minute walk from our location. And there’s so many other great things here too, like a fantastic new/used bookstore, a record shop, a dance studio, etc.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My improv journey began when I auditioned for a troupe in Green Bay, WI – where I was living at the time. My first improv teacher, and mentor was Mike Eserkaln. He is the owner of ComedyCity in Green Bay, WI. Another person that deserves a lot of credit is my wife, Gina Dugan. She has helped run ImprovCity since it’s very foundation, and now she is co-owner and Artistic Director of our Thursday/Sunday troupe.
