We had the good fortune of connecting with DAVIS and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DAVIS, how do you think about risk?
As a songwriter, whenever I’ve played it safe I’ve always failed. Being truly honest is always the most risky thing, but it’s the most artistically rewarding. It’s hard to allow yourself to be truly vulnerable and tell your story. Sometimes your ego gets in the way and wants you to rely on your comfort zone. Sometimes you have other people’s voices in your head telling you to sing about this or sing about that. But if you don’t take a risk, you’ll never know who you really are as an artist. Ultimately, it’s up to you to push yourself to a place of honesty that can unlock magic.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My name is DAVIS. I am a singer, songwriter, and multi instrumentalist from North County. If you play video games, you may have heard one of my songs.. If you listen to 91X, you may have heard one of my songs. I make rock n roll music.

I grew up in Southern California. I’ve toured with artists like Peter Murphy (Bauhaus), Local Natives, Blondie, and more. I’ve performed for Stevie Wonder, and collaborated with Dave Catching (Queens of the Stone Age). You can hear Ryan Tedder singing background vocals on my song “Get Mine” (featured in the video game Far Cry 5). If you used to play Guitar Hero, you probably played along to the guitar solo in my song “Two Cents.”

I play live shows solo, or with my band behind me. I grew up listening to Nirvana and Modest Mouse, so my music falls somewhere in between those two. Pursuing music is never an easy journey, but I try to remember the influences that got me started. It helps me push forward. Because I’ve met and worked with such a diverse group of artists, it’s helped me stay humble and stay motivated whether times are good or bad. I’ve learned so many lessons along the way but the main one is this: don’t worry about seeking approval from people you don’t respect.

Be true to yourself and your art. Say something that only you could say.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First things first we are going to Beacon’s beach. Only there can you begin your journey toward understanding North County. Of course afterward, you will be dining at Karina’s Tacos and thanking me for the best tacos you’ve ever had. If it’s a Sunday then you’ll want to grab some tea over at the Leucadia Farmer’s Market.

Afternoon coffee can be found at Steady State in Carlsbad. Then we’ll go look at records at Spin in the Village.

Now it’s the evening. And because you’re my best friend, you’re of course gonna wanna see me play a show. So while you’re in town you can see me play in Oceanside or at Booze Bros in Vista.

And lastly, before you head out we’ll go check out guitar pedals at Coast Sonic in Carlsbad.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Huge shoutout to the North County music scene. There’s a solid community up here looking out for one another.
