We had the good fortune of connecting with Darshana Patel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Darshana, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
“Good things come to those who wait” is a piece of conventional wisdom that suggests patience will eventually yield rewards. However, in my experience with public service and running for office, this advice doesn’t always hold true. In the fast-paced world of politics, the landscape can change quickly, and if you are not responsive, you can miss a critical decision moment leading to a missed opportunity or remain in stagnation. The dynamic nature of public service requires proactive engagement, not passive waiting lest small misunderstandings or miscommunications can snowball into runaway communication avalanches.

Instead, my experience has shown me that “Strike while the iron is hot” is often better conventional wisdom in the public service arena. This approach is crucial in public service and political campaigns, where timing can be everything. Waiting too long to act can have detrimental effects on those in urgent need of support. Working families struggling with rising costs or students in desperate need of high-quality education cannot afford to wait for a politician’s perfect moment. They require immediate and decisive action. Successful candidates and public servants are those who not only recognize opportunities but are also prepared to act on them immediately. This readiness comes from constantly honing skills, staying informed, and building a network of support.

As a scientist, mom, and public service board member, I have developed the skills necessary to be proactive and take on unexpected challenges. These roles have given me compassion, perspective, and purpose. By actively engaging in community service, participating in local government, and continuously improving my knowledge and abilities, I position myself to take advantage of opportunities when they appear. I don’t merely wait for good things to happen; I create my own success through diligent preparation and timely action. My dedication to my community drives me to be proactive, ensuring that when opportunities arise, I am ready to seize them and make a positive impact. This approach not only benefits my personal and professional growth but also ensures that I am prepared to address the immediate needs of those I aim to serve.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a dedicated professional with a diverse background as a scientist, a working mother, and a public service board member. My journey into public service was not by design or formal training, but rather though an organic process that has evolved over the years as I have taken on the challenges of addressing public policy needs.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about.
I am a dedicated professional with a diverse background as a scientist, a working mother, and a public service board member. My skillset and work are unique in that it bridges the gap between scientific research, community service, and policy governance. What sets me apart is my ability to integrate scientific rigor with a deep commitment to community well-being. I am particularly proud of my contributions to improving educational outcomes in my community. My excitement stems from seeing tangible positive changes in people’s lives because of my efforts.

How did you get to where you are today professionally? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
My journey to where I am today was far from easy. Growing up, my family faced significant financial challenges, especially after my mother’s passing when I was just 14. Despite these hardships, I was determined to pursue my education and career goals. I worked part-time jobs to help offset family expenses and fund my education, eventually earning a degree in Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in Biophysics. Balancing my career with motherhood and public service required resilience and unwavering dedication. I overcame challenges by maintaining a strong support network, staying focused on my goals, and continuously adapting to new situations. Each obstacle taught me valuable lessons in perseverance and personal growth.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the power of community and collaboration. No matter how skilled or knowledgeable one might be, working together with others can amplify impact and increase the effectiveness of a policy shift. I’ve also learned the importance of staying proactive and seizing opportunities when they arise. Waiting for the perfect moment can often lead to missed chances. Lastly, balancing various roles has taught me the significance of time management and prioritizing what truly matters.

What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I want the world to know that my story is one of resilience, dedication, and service. My brand is built on the principles of compassion, integrity, and proactive engagement. Whether it’s through scientific research, public service, or community advocacy, my goal is to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. I believe that with hard work, collaboration, and a commitment to serving others, we can overcome any challenge and create a better future for all. My journey is a testament to the idea that even in the face of adversity, we can achieve our dreams and make a positive impact on the world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The beauty of the San Diego region is that we have access to incredible diversity, offering everything from stunning beaches and rugged mountains to expansive deserts and vibrant urban centers. This variety extends to its rich history, cultural landmarks, and an impressive range of culinary delights. Over the course of a week, you’ll experience the best of what San Diego has to offer, immersing yourself in its unique geographies and flavors.
Day 1: Little Italy Farmer’s Market & Balboa Park – For those flying into San Diego International Airport, I recommend starting your San Diego adventure with a visit to the Little Italy Farmer’s Market, one of the largest in the city. Wander through the bustling stalls, sampling fresh produce, artisan cheeses, and local delicacies.
Next, head to Balboa Park, a cultural oasis in the heart of San Diego. Home to beautiful gardens, historic architecture, and world-class museums, Balboa Park offers something for everyone. I am a member of the Fleet Science Center Advisory Board and highly recommend seeing an IMAX movie or just exploring the exhibits there.
Day 2: Coronado Island – Take a short ferry ride or drive over the iconic Coronado Bridge to Coronado Island. This charming island boasts pristine, white sandy beaches, the historic Hotel del Coronado, and delightful shops and restaurants. I enjoy taking a towel, a beach umbrella, and good book to spend the day relaxing by soaking in the gentle rays and breathing in the fresh air. I always feel rejuvenated and ready for adventure after a day on Coronado Island.
Day 3: Saatvik Restaurant & Julian Mining Company – Begin your day with an authentic Gujarati vegetarian meal at Saatvik, known for its delicious and authentic Indian vegetarian cuisine. This local, woman owned and operated restaurant offers a casual dining experience with dishes that range from traditional homestyle snacks to a full course thali meal. The recipes remind me of my own mom’s cooking, and I love to offer friends the chance to sample the flavors I grew up with.
Afterward, drive to the nearby mountain town of Julian, famous for its apple orchards and gold mining history. I highly recommend a docent led tour with the Julian Mining Company. They take you into an actual historic gold mine to experience what it was like for miners to search for gold in the quartz veins of the mountain. They also let you experience panning for gold and show you how gold was isolated from stone. While you are in Julian, I suggest trying Julian Pie Company pie – my favorite is peach/apple with a crumble topping.
Day 4: Palomar Observatory – Head to the mountains for stargazing at the Palomar Observatory. Located in the Cleveland National Forest, this renowned observatory offers breathtaking views and the chance to learn about the universe through its impressive telescopes. The drive itself is an adventure, with scenic vistas and winding roads. When we go up there with family, we often stop for a short hike along the way. There are also a large variety of campgrounds, lodges, and rentals to stay overnight to take in the night sky and see the Milky Way.
Day 5: Legoland California – Spend a day of fun and adventure at Legoland California in Carlsbad. Whether or not you have kids with you, Legoland is a delightful and thought-provoking playground. They have interactive exhibits, and impressive Lego sculptures. I love that you can buy individual, hard to find pieces to complement Lego sets and help that master builder expand their creative build range. I would then send them to Pizza Port Solana Beach for dinner because the pizza and beer are both some of the best in the area. It is a very casual dining spot that offers a short walk to the beach where you can often find a gorgeously satisfying sunset.
Day 6: Torrey Pines State Park & Realm Of The 52 Remedies Speakeasy – I would start the final day at Torrey Pines State Park with its beautiful views, rare Torrey Pines, and friendly park rangers. The views are fantastic. San Diego has a growing number of speakeasy locations and The 52 Remedies Speakeasy does not disappoint. This hidden gem in Kearny Mesa transports you to another era with its stylish décor, delicious cocktails, and elegantly mysterious ambiance.

San Diego County’s diverse landscapes and rich cultural offerings ensure a memorable trip for any visitor. From the diverse urban markets to awe-inspiring vistas of mountain observatories, and historic mining towns to coastal paradises, this region truly has it all. There are many, equally wondrous sites in the area that I have not mentioned, such as horseback riding around Lake Hodges through Bibby Ranch or visiting San Cordiano Winery, and I always welcome friends and family back to take in the beauty of San Diego.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to dedicate this story to my family, friends, allies, and volunteers who helped ensure my preparedness for the challenges of campaign life.
