Meet Darius Moody | DJ & Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Darius Moody and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Darius, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
In society we have always acknowledged noble jobs especially when regarding status. From those who are considered Royalty to modern day nobles like lawyers, doctors, etc. – my point is, even those people have their favorite artists. You may be someone’s favorite. If you have an artistic expression I believe it is best to put it all out for the world to accept and critique. People pushed me into my creativity because I had no fear of expressing myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what makes me different from some of my peers is that I had the opportunity to live on three different continents during my creative journey while also being in my 20s. That experience helped me form a perspective of the world that you can only develop through traveling. With that I think I am able to communicate my creativity with a broader perspective, for example, when I am DJing I can engage the room and adapt pretty easily to diverse crowds.
I have learned not to ever be too smart to ask questions and to allow people to show you who they are and what they are capable of. I learned to let people ask for your help instead of always offering because it isn’t always welcome and never forget to advocate for yourself and your brand first. Business is business and it is not meant to be friendly!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Assuming they’re arriving on a Monday afternoon/evening – our first stop would have to be The Friendly on 30th st so my friend can get acclimated to San Diego smash burgers.
Tuesday might slow paced due to jet lag so we could get a late breakfast at Papayas Juice Bar in Bonita, followed by a drive to Seaport Village or Chula Vista marina to get some early sun. Assuming there some Tuesday excitement about San Diego we could hit up Polite Provisions to kick off the night and eat at Fortunate Son for food. Definitely recommend ending the night at NeoSoul Tuesdays at Phantom Lounge (the live band element always adds a good feeling).
Wednesday would be a long day. Start the morning at Morning Glory or Rhythms Chicken & Waffles for breakfast. Followed by a trip to Balboa park so we can walk off carbs while seeing all the museums in the area (natural history is my favorite). *NAP TIME* For Wednesday night we could get dinner at Piacere Mio in South Park and if drinks are involved pop over to Fernside or head to Bluefoot Bar in North Park to see what the DJs are spinning.
Thursday night for me is usually slow so I can get rest before a busy weekend but it could all be summed up with a trip to Menya Ultra in Clairemont and then head to Kate Sessions to watch a sunset over the bay.
Friday/Saturday night would depend on what kind of friend this is and what’s going on in the city. We would likely do a mix of upscale and urban socializing with lots of eating. Dinner at Louisiana Purchase is a must at some point and so is dinner at Juniper & Ivy. The drinks could be served from Understory in Del Mar, or at Part Time Lover in North Park. Likely ending the night at the Lafayette Hotel, The Owl, or Side Bar depending on the mood.
Sunday would be another recovery day but I can’t let my friend leave without trying Pho Hung Cali on Broadway or going to Soul Sunday at Quartyard DTSD and spending an evening at Sunset Cliffs.
The Zoo & Sea World would just be depending on who is visiting.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to start off casting a big net by saying thank you to everyone internationally who has booked, promoted, and supported me through my creative journey as both a DJ and a Photographer.
Special shoutout Brixton Rota (Spain), Club 54 Yokosuka (Japan), Tokyo Lovehotels (Japan), Black San Diego, The Committee, Understory, Chefs SD, High Definition, Soul Sunday, Cultured Entertainment, SD Melanin, Mixed Company and Rhythm & Brunch. These are just a few that stick out in my mind right now.
