We had the good fortune of connecting with Darby Velazquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Darby, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I think my thought process has evolved a lot regarding my business. It started as a way for me to really feel connected to people and capturing them in their element. I think it has evolved to creating a fun and stress free experience and environment for couples to be themselves and vulnerable to be able to capture the intimacy in their relationship. So now I am revamping my business to create real, raw, and intimate photos of my clients. I want creative expression to be able to lead my couples through this experience and trust to be able to push people to get weird and to have some fun while doing it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am really excited about my recent work. I feel it truly expresses my vision and my passion projects. I was really scared to change my clientele because it was less money and a big switch to go from big weddings to intimate weddings and elopements but I knew it was something I needed to do to stay inspired. I want the world to know that doing what you want and being who you are can be really scary but so worth it because you get to embrace the true you and start to be surrounded by those around you who support your pursuit of your dreams. My brand is now intimate, raw, and unique weddings!! Neutral tones are my absolute favorite, and the weirder the better. I also love to get lost. Half the time I travel to places I’ve never been. Google maps is a best friend of mine and as much as I research, my favorite thing is finding places I wouldn’t have expected to find. Driving and not knowing where I’m going is the best. I look for spots, stop when I see it, then move on to the next. It’s my absolute favorite!!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a week long trip? The first place is always the beach! I live in San Clemente and it’s the perfect beach town. I’d go walk the trail with them and then go to the local shops and places to eat along Del Mar. then I’d probably take them to my favorite ice cream place, after’s, in Irvine to end the day. Parasailing in Dana point the next day and maybe some whale watching. One of the days we’d go to big bear or Julian to get some mountain and lake views. If we wanted to take some photos I’d take them to glamis, which is one of my favorite spots. We’d hike around the local spots in San Clemente and go through the cliffs in San onofre. Thrifting is a must!! And then we’d probably end the week some beer at pizza port.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The photography community as a whole. I have met so many photographers along the way on my journey who each have added something to me as a photographer and have given me advice. So many people inspire me. It’s hrs to pick just one.
