We had the good fortune of connecting with Dan Hark and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dan, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk and reward essentially summarize fitness and results, and pretty much summarize my path from the start of NXPT to where we are now. I began as a combat athlete, putting my body and health on the line for competition, justifying the risk with the reward of a medal, or cash prize. Transitioning from athlete to coach, the risk evolved from my own physical well being to the time and resources being poured into my athletes and getting the reward of their success. And leveling up from coach to business owner, risking everything for a belief in a service and system I created knowing that the hard work would create something I could build a family and provide for them on. I had instilled into me at a young age from coaches that “How you do anything, is how you do everything.” Risks are not something that should discourage you from something but instead act as a motivating factor. For me there is no difference in mindset from wanting to reach a physical goal, financial goal, win a competition, complete a 12 hour endurance event, it all comes down to committing to the risk, and fighting to see and gain the reward. Start it and finish it stronger than you started.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
NXPT is a hybrid gym, offering the most dynamic workouts available to all fitness levels from the beginner to the advanced. What sets us apart is the ability to create workouts using equipment found in all arenas of fitness, and format it for the individual to apply themselves according to their ability level. We have crossfit competitors, OCR athletes, Figure competitors, weekend warriors, and absolute beginners, all working out side by side and achieving their goals. Owning a fitness business in San Diego is not easy. We face adversity at every turn, from franchise gyms popping up every month, to the seasonal flow of fitness, to the most recent battle with Covid. It takes a creative and diligent mindset to stay out ahead of obstacles, market appropriately, and adapt and overcome situations as they arise. The great thing about coming from a competitive and fitness based background is you are taught to overcome adversity as it applies to the physical. In the business realm, the obstacles you face seem so minor compared to the struggles you had to overcome physically. Each day we push our members to focus on “How will you be stronger tomorrow?” And we approach each day as a business in the same way. How can we evolve, grow, expand, our services location community outreach and make a greater impact on those around us. The continued growth of our company is directly correlated to the amount of effort we put into changing lives and being a positive impact on everyone we encounter. We are blessed to be a blessing to our community!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being born and raised in San Diego, we have a tradition every Wednesday to hit Ocean Beach, park on Santa Cruz, walk the tide pools and head to South Beach Bar and Grill and eat and have a drink, then walk back. That is now a family tradition my wife and I share with our 4 kids. You also have to do a bon fire outside the Dana Hotel along the bay and watch the Sea World fire work show!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
‘Stronger Together’ is a motto that we have promoted for as long as I can remember at NXPT, and it is because embedded in the fabric of NXPT and its success is sweat, hours, sacrifice, and effort from hundreds of members, our trainers, and our support teams at home. Our members see the effort given daily by our training team and it is incredible to see how willing they are to re invest into our gym. April 9th 2021 My wife and I celebrate our 10 year anniversary, our business will also be 13 years old. We often laugh about the days where I would fall asleep at the dinner table while eating, or we shared one car to get around while training clients around town. Without her support, patience, wisdom and prayer I would have never made it this far. We are a team, and you know what they say: Team work makes the dream work!
