We had the good fortune of connecting with Dalton Douglas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dalton, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
Photography started out as a hobby from the day that my parents gave me my first camera as a teenager. From there I took a couple of photography classes to help understand lighting and composition. The end goal is to keep the feeling of photography being a hobby while also creating supplemental income. By the end of my career I would like to work partially in the off-road photography industry. Most of my photography consists of action shots, whether that be jets, dirt biking/motocross, off-road vehicles, and cars.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I used photographer as a stress reliever when I was in college. It was a way to get away from all the deadlines, it is a form of art that I found serenity . There are some hard lesson that I learned, number one is to always have a backup fully charged battery and empty SD card before leaving for any event. I have gotten to the top of hiking trails to find that I didn’t insert a SD card and the frustration was real.
So I’ve learned to be overly prepared, its better to have all the equipment and not need it than to not have the equipment and need it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am born and raised in Southern California, specifically San Diego. My favorite spots consist of the beaches, Torrey Pines Glider Port, for nightlife the sky bar lounge that overlooks Petco Park. For activities, kayaking in La Jolla cove and/or snorkeling depending on the time of year to see the nerf sharks. A good hike for sunset would be the Torrey Pines reserve.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
With the support of my family and following Thomas D. Mangelsen, National Geographic to get a better understanding of the eye of Wildlife photographers.
