We had the good fortune of connecting with Cynthia Demorest FunFit & Friends LLC aka getfitwithcynthia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cynthia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My business journey unfolded organically, with little initial planning. As a full-time Human Resources professional, I began teaching group fitness classes to my colleagues as a cost-saving measure for our company’s fitness program, offering them for free. What started as a practical solution quickly revealed the joy of inspiring others to move and prioritize self-care.
Witnessing the smiles and sense of accomplishment on my students’ faces after a long day at the office became a source of fulfillment for me. Not only did teaching provide an outlet for my own work-related stress, but it also ignited a passion for helping others find joy and wellness through exercise. This newfound enjoyment prompted me to extend my classes to the public, further embracing my role as a facilitator of fitness and happiness.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I never imagined myself as a fitness professional, partly due to my physical appearance. While I don’t fit the conventional image of a toned and skinny fitness instructor, I’ve come to realize that authenticity resonates far more with my audience. As your friendly neighborhood fitness instructor, I pride myself on being approachable to everyone, regardless of their size or shape.
My classes cater to all fitness levels and ages, offering a diverse range of formats from drumming-inspired workouts like POUND®, to dance-infused sessions like REFIT, and strength and resistance training like REV+FLOW and AMPD Fusion. Each routine is meticulously choreographed to music, ensuring a fun and enjoyable experience for all participants.
Before every class, I dedicate time to preparation and practice, ensuring I can deliver the routine flawlessly and engage with my students wholeheartedly. I believe in pushing boundaries while listening to one’s body, fostering progress over perfection. Above all, I strive to create an atmosphere where everyone feels empowered and, most importantly, has fun.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a self-proclaimed food enthusiast, I often joke that I exercise to eat. Among my favorite spots in San Diego are Gyu-Kaku for delectable Japanese cuisine, Burger Bench in my neighborhood for mouthwatering burger options, Cute Cakes for irresistible desserts and brunch, and the serene ambiance and fine wine at Orfila Vineyards. For a taste of Filipino food, a trip to Carinderia by the beach is a must.
Beyond the culinary scene, San Diego offers a plethora of activities to explore. Consider taking a leisurely stroll through the historic Gaslamp Quarter, indulging in retail therapy at Seaport Village, or immersing yourself in the natural beauty of Balboa Park. For a dose of culture, the San Diego Museum of Art and the USS Midway Museum are both worth a visit. And of course, no trip to San Diego would be complete without soaking up the sun at one of the city’s picturesque beaches or embarking on a whale-watching excursion from the harbor.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My students’ love and support have been my backbone for a decade, motivating me to continue serving our community. Together, we’ve built a strong, supportive family that grows with each passing year.
