We had the good fortune of connecting with Claudia Grimm and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Claudia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Healthy risk is essential for growth in all areas of your life. I view it as an advanced course in school. You have the basics like how to eat, sleep, and workout, but if you want to challenge yourself, you take the upper classes. I leapt into entrepreneurship and quit my corporate job (risky), started my own plant care business from scratch (risky), at only 26 years old (risky), and have big dreams of its success (risky risky). So, the role risk taking has played in my life is that I’ve become accustomed to being uncomfortable in my career which creates a strong sense of confidence in my life. By figuring out what it takes to make a difference in the way that suits me best, I know what’s possible. I will continue to take this advanced course to understand my capabilities and I think everyone else should too. It’s a free course (usually)!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is Zen Plant Care and I help preserve the health and beauty of houseplants in order to create a calm state of mind. Some of my services include:

-installations
-general maintenance
-repots
-plant sitting while you’re away
-one-time consultations

What sets me apart from other plant care services is that it’s not just about creating (or saving) a beautiful jungle in your home or office, it’s about de-stressing the mind by controlling your environment. You are what you surround yourself with. I will also be donating to an environmental charity soon!

Business-wise, one of the biggest challenges I face is patience. I’m in my first year of business so marketing the brand is hard work, but when you have goals you are trying to achieve, it’s easy to get disappointed when they don’t happen. Patience can pave the way for success.

I’ve also learned that your clients and your employees are number one priority. If you treat your employees well and you stay connected with your clients, you’ll see the results in your business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In San Diego? The whole city is bustling with things to do! We would:

-Shop at the local farmer’s markets like Little Italy on Saturdays or La Jolla on Sundays.
-Have a picnic at Civita Park.
-Eat at The Henry and tour the Hotel Del Coronado.
-Go to Windandsea beach and watch the surfers.
-Visit the botanical garden at Balboa Park.
-Find and watch live music.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh gosh, if I could send a shoutout to many people and things, I would. But one specific person deserves first place, and that’s my significant other. He has seen me through my trials and errors and supported my journey without fail. I’ve realized having a support team or a welcoming community creates real change. It allows you the power to follow your dreams because no one is telling you no (or you learn to ignore the haters).

My other shoutouts would be to my weekly networking group, Mid-City Networking, my business coach, Paula, and all the authors who wrote useful business books!
