We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Ward and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christina, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think one of the most important factors to the success thus far in my business is confidence in what I’m doing. It’s very easy to doubt myself or wonder if I’m making the right decision when I am so tired from being a stay at home mom and looking at a sink full of dirty dishes at the end of a busy day. I wonder if I’m actually really as creative as I think i am or if someone could do it better than me. Doubt is an awful feeling and it is what has always held me back in the past but I took a leap of faith and I’m so glad I did. I love what I do and I love seeing the face of a client when I have brought their vision to life. Doubt has made me not say yes to opportunities before but now, because I have built confidence in myself and my abilities, I put myself out there way more and so many opportunities have come my way in such a short period of time. I always stay true to what I want my business to be and that is to give the best I can to each of my clients and do it with confidence. Without being confident in my self, my business would never be a success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a cake artist and baker. I have always loved art and as a first generation Sicilian I love to eat! My father had a bakery when I was growing up and he made fresh Italian bread. I wanted to start a home bakery where I make Italian cookies when I got married and moved to San Diego 15 years ago but I kept running into roadblocks and life happened. I had two kids and my dream took a back seat.

Then last year I started taking some classes on sugarwork and learned how to make a gum paste peony to put on a cake… that was all it took and I was hooked! I couldn’t get enough of making realistic sugar flowers and I was really good at it! Then it hit me that I should look into starting the bakery that I’ve always wanted to. Although still having little ones at home, I knew it would be challenging. Thank goodness I am able to have a home bakery so that I can fulfill my dream and still stay at home with my kids and with the help of my amazing husband it has been a dream come true!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would go for a hike at Torrey Pines. I would take her to Born and Raised in Little Italy for a fancy dinner and drinks. I would take her to the beach of course probably in Coronado and then get gelato in the village. I’m pretty boring lol

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My amazing husband Craig who is always my best cheerleader!
