We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Rogers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christina, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success was a naughty word for me as recently as a few years ago. I always thought it meant achieving the fabled white picket fence, 401k, and a certain level of financial and career advancement. And somehow this just didn’t align with who I was.

Nowadays, it’s a very different story. I have learned so much about my core values through the process of being a full-time entrepreneur. Now, rather than financial, or material achievements, I am most driven by retaining my autonomy, and using that freedom to create the largest impact I can, in my community.

If I have more free time, I have more time to pursue things like the Women’s Self-Defense classes and Safety Seminars we run in Ocean Beach; or the International Women’s Day Self-Empowerment event.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to call myself a ‘Container Creator.’ That is, I am the most fulfilled when I am creating safe spaces for people to feel fully seen and appreciated. With that as my guide, my photography has always been geared to creative and unique portraits. Whether it be considered ‘boudoir’ or brand photos, my goal is for each person to have an experience that leaves them feeling empowered.

I also run a health and wellness brand by the exact same values; so I love to combine my skills together to create spaces where people can learn, explore, and be their authentic selves.

It isn’t always easy. Finding the right clients who are ready to expand can be a challenge. When people are not fully ready for the process they may be way too hard on themselves. As a result, I am learning how to create and keep boundaries for myself and my business, so as not to try way too hard to ‘overserve’ people that cannot see their existing beauty.

It is very painful to have people look at a photo you have spent hours on, and have them immediately begin to point out everything about themselves that they don’t love. It’s quite heartbreaking, really.

I am learning to separate my own worth, from my business, as a result of this heartbreak. I am having to learn to let everyone have their own timeline and space for finding self-love, and that it isn’t my responsibility to overwork myself if clients aren’t ready to grow.

I am also giving myself time to continue to blossom as an advocate for safety and authenticity. Some days are easier than others, but I fully intend to keep leading by example. I only hope I can make an impact, even if it’s just by teaching myself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love San Diego! We have everything from surf shacks to the opera. I adore La Jolla Playhouse, Balboa Park, the beaches, Mission Trails for hiking, snorkeling, and always the Zoo/Safari Park. Little Lion in OB is my ‘you must eat here’ go to. I adore their food, atmosphere, and team. Hawthorne Coffee in Normal Heights is my favorite coffee shop. And I’m obsessed with Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot in Clairemont.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have had some absolutely amazing mentors and guides throughout my life: – My mother has always been there for me, through all sorts of ups and downs.
– My soul sister Anastasia, though physically distant, has been by my side for over 20 years.
– My loving partner Joe has turned my world on its head, encouraging me to make the leap, regardless of the naysayers out there.
– My friend and Krav Maga instructor Tony has shown me ways to look, and show up in the world that I never knew was possible.
– My friends/spiritual leaders Jerry and Mara have shown me how to wrangle my demons, and turn them into allies.
– My San Diego sacred sister tribe. We lift each other as we climb. I love you all.

I have dear friends too many to count in the time we have, but I am grateful for every one of them. And lastly, a shoutout to myself. I always forget to celebrate that I keep walking past my fears, and obstacles, even if sometimes there’s hesitation at the beginning. But I haven’t quit yet! So cheers, me! I love you.
