We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Kennedy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christina, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
The industry is really interesting because the only reason it exists is because of the “outsiders”. Artists quite literally need the fans to be continually invested. It’s a business at the end of the day. And just like any business, the factor I believe gets the most overlooked is the amount of work that goes into building a sustainable career and keeping the customers happy, especially as an independent artist like myself. Labels have a team of qualified and educated professionals who do all sorts of different tasks from graphic design, music production, stage coaching, content creation, brand/artist development and writing all within their label. However, independent artists mostly do all this work themselves and must learn quite literally all of these skills from the ground up.

Despite someone’s love for music, most artists give up at this stage. But what I’ve found out as I continue to do all this work, is I’m not just doing it for myself, but rather for the “outsiders”, because that’s what keeps me going.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Like many artists and creatives, I grew up with a background in music and performance by doing school plays / musicals, piano lessons, etc. It wasn’t until I was 12 years old that I started to songwriter and quickly discovered a new passion to express and move people emotionally. I feel like I’ve always had a way with words and have been told I’m very articulate even from a young age. I also wear my heart on my sleeve. So songwriting was kind of that perfect integration of storytelling, expression and reflection. I also love to act and perform. It’s like an extension of myself with no borders and acting is such a freeing experience because you can be a whole different character. I eventually got signed with an agent and have been involved with both music and acting at the time. Then around 16 or 17 years old, I wanted to write a short film and ever since then, I’ve been in love with the behind-the-scenes of creating not only visual art but projects with other inspiring creatives!

I think all 3 of these aspects of art make my career in music and film both challenging but also extremely rewarding and fun. Obviously, it’s a lot of work, time, and energy and not easy but I love everything I have done so far and am only motivated to keep creating expressive work that speaks to others. I think that is what bonds us as humans.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So I’m from Vancouver, Canada (arguably one of the most beautiful places on earth). I would have to recommend going to Whistler especially if you are a skier, biker or hiker. I grew up on the mountain and currently being in Toronto just makes me appreciate the sites so much more. I would also recommend checking out this one amazing Indian cuisine restaurant my family and I love to go to called “Indian Fusion”. It is UNMATCHED. Another great place if you have a sweet tooth is “Cream Pony” which is a cute little donut shop! Since Vancouver is known for the outdoors and incredible, you can’t visit without hiking up Grouse Mountain and checking out the incredible view of the city. There are also so many other places outside of the mainland in the province that are so beautiful.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest shoutout goes to my parents, 100%. They are my biggest supporters which has allowed me to take classes and be able to fund some of my work. I would not be able to do what I do without them.

I’d also like to shout out all the people who have guided and mentored me through this journey of not only my career but in life. My second-grade teacher, childhood vocal teacher, high-school choir and music directors, acting instructors and industry professionals. These people have not only inspired me with their talent but also ignited a passion for the arts in me.

The last shoutout goes to my incredible friends who I get to learn from, and my audience. I’ve been so blessed to have a supportive network to know all the lyrics to some of my songs! 🙂
