We had the good fortune of connecting with Christian Sierra and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christian, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Belief. It all starts there. Before I even owned a camera, I believed I could figure it out. I just wanted to go out and start doing it. To learn as I go.
I’d spend a few hours watching YouTube videos from people who had the video quality that I wanted. Their educational background or subscriber count didn’t matter to me. They were doing something I wanted to do and I was hungry for that knowledge.
I knew I could learn faster by doing it on my own than by spending tons of money trying to learn it at school. And I knew I didn’t just want to be a guy who knew how to work a camera, I wanted people to hire me for my vision and creativity.
Years later I’m very happy with where I’m at. I’m still learning and growing every day, but I never would have gotten here without first believing I could.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started in music. I loved producing music for artists; taking their ideas and forming them into dynamic and cohesive songs. It was there that I saw the need for visual content. Artists needed to build their brand with photo and video as well as music. Unfortunately, the video/photo creators in our area didn’t create the kind of content I was hoping for. So, after a several hours on YouTube University, I decided I could do it myself. I bought my first camera and have since had the pleasure of working with bigger brands such as Pandora Jewelry as well as local start ups such as DRIHP.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love atmosphere and nature. So I’d take them to the best scenic spots in San Diego; Kate sessions Park, Mission Park Bay, Coronado overlooking the city, Blacks Beach, etc. Then we’d hit up some of the best food and drinks in town with a great vibe; The Madison, Born and Raised, Kettner Exchange, Blue Boheme, Common Stock, Queenstown, etc
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the countless people who took the time to create free educational content on YouTube and other online platforms. The first creator I gravitated toward was Christian Mate Grab, a content creator from Germany. I resonated with his approach of simplicity; arguing that you didn’t need more more or more gear. Everything you needed you already have.
