We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Skaggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My business was created to fill a gap that I experienced. As a new mom, I wanted spaces to talk about the harder, taboo parts and a space that would help me understand all the changes I had been through. After trying different groups and organizations, I didn’t feel my needs were met and so I set out to ask other women about their experiences. It was confirmed that many other women felt this gap and so I set out to fill that with my business model.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My brand and story is one of using an authentic story and self to connect meaningfully with others. It’s not about impressing others or the “fake it till you make it” model, it’s about being a leader in every step of the way and letting my imperfections be strengths and the messiness of life be the groundwork of my business. I’m am proud and excited that I have been able to build a business that normalizes the taboo and challenges norms- I help women to find safety in themselves. I got to this space by being a discerning sponge- soaking up as much as I can but only from the sources that align with my values and goals. Putting aside distractions or “shoulds” has been pivotal in building my business. I’ve learned that every day I have to peel back layers to see what thought patterns or experiences are challenging me and continually do the mental work that allows me to do the business work.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love a good mix of people and culture and open spaces and deep conversations. I would want to spend time walking down High street, stopping for a patio drink and then transitioning to a few nights of camping- staying up around a campfire telling stories and looking at the stars and exploring nature in a refreshing way.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Haven Collective- a coworking space in Columbus that goes beyond offering a place, but creates meaningful community and opportunities to grow.
