Meet Charles Laliberte | Board chairman of ChildrenUP & retired secondary teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Charles Laliberte and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charles, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My wife and I have been secondary teachers. After visiting Uganda to visit a friend and learning of the needs of rural students in obtaining an education, we decided to see if we could help. With the help of a university professor in northern Uganda, we were able to begin the process. Though organized in 2007, we did not really get off the ground until 2010. At this time we have helped eighty one students.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was a secondary teacher specializing in visual art and French. I have wonderful memories of my time helping students and it gave me insights that have helped in understanding the plight of Ugandan students.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I was taking a friend to Uganda, there are two aspects I would want to share. The first is visiting the wildlife in Uganda: mountain gorillas, lions, giraffes, hippos, etc. But for real motivation, I would introduce them to the students we are helping. Those in school and those who are now professional members of society.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The success of our efforts is reliant on the many student sponsors who continue to support their student year after year.
