We had the good fortune of connecting with Celeste Barbier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Celeste, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I love singing so much and I studied music in college so it was always my ambition to be a full time performer, but I had never learned how to break into the business. I finally started busking on weekends and performing for special events until it finally turned into a full time career and I was able to quit my day job in 2014! One of the best decisions I ever made!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an opera trained solo vocalist that has been blessed with a very unique contralto voice that my fans find incredibly soothing & healing. I cover many beloved jazz, folk, oldies and beautiful pop songs from the last 100 years!! Literally from 1920-2020. I never use set lists and invite audiences to make requests like a human juke box. Also, in 2019 I finally made the jump into creating my own original music. I sing with tracks so I am affordable for small events & a great fit for small venues & spaces. You’d have to see me perform to really know exactly what sets me apart from my personal style to my voice and the way I perform. I bring & elicit a lot of emotion into my shows which keeps my audiences transfixed.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So much has changed over the past year, but some of my favorite activities are available including whale watching tours on San Diego Whale Watch in Mission Bay and walking around The San Diego Zoo Safari Park. I would go eat at a local venue such as Harney Sushi Oceanside, Wrench & Rodent Oceanside, or Local Tap House. If we wanted a fancy dinner I would go to one of my friend Deborah Scott’s amazing restaurants such as Coasterra, Island Prime, Vintana or C Level. For a fun painting night I would take them to Cynthia’s Artistic Expressions in Oceanside and if they love art we’d definitely go to the Oceanside Museum of Art & Hill Street Country Club at Linksoul. Invite them to join me at one of my shows at Coomber! The great thing about San Diego is there is so much to love across the county!’
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A big shout out to Coomber Craft Wines who have been such a blessing to local performers like myself, especially in 2020 when performance opportunities became scarce yet they did everything they could to kee0 live music alive in Oceanside! The North County LGBTQ Resource Center has always been extremely supportive of not only me as a performer, but as a community member. They have been unwavering in that support and love including me in many of their events. This is an extraordinary organization that I feel lucky to have in my city.
