We had the good fortune of connecting with Cassandra Borjon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cassandra, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My work life balance has vastly improved since starting my own business. Autonomy and work life balance are the main reasons I started my business. I’m very passionate about the work I do but I’m also recognizant that I am most productive when I have a work life balance. I’m also conscious of when I’m most productive and when I’m not. As a result, my style did not fit the typical 9-5 pm mold. Overall, work life balance is extremely important to me. I am a firm believer that one’s personal life, work load, and business will suffer greatly if one does not fulfill all other aspects and needs which make them happy. Nourishing the soul, engaging in self care as well as hobbies and activities one enjoys, will inevitably bring one happiness and energy which will in turn pour over into one’s work and business.

What should our readers know about your business?

I am currently the sole owner of two businesses. However, my main business is Law Office of Cassandra Borjon, APC which is a solo law firm. I practice Immigration Removal Defense and mainly provide legal representation to individuals who are in removal proceedings. I also handle other types of cases before the various immigration agencies. I believe my life experience as a first generation female Latina attorney, coupled with my passion and determination to help others, is what sets me apart from others. I genuinely care about helping others but am also firm about maintaining integrity at all times and managing client expectations. I constantly strive to treat others as I would like to be treated. By maintaining integrity, there are little to no misunderstandings. I am extremely proud of my accomplishments as I am also the first attorney in my extended family. My eagerness and determination to start my business and succeed are two factors that got me where I am today business-wise. The other factors are encouragement from friends, family, and colleagues as well as the guidance I received from colleagues. I was not afraid to ask questions and, at any given time, the right person or resource always crossed my path to help me at whatever stage I found myself in.

I started my business not knowing how I was going to pay that month’s rent and bills. However, my eagerness and determination were so strong that I was able to have that “tunnel” vision I’ve had throughout my life, to push me through this phase. The day I started my business I was sitting at my kitchen table, using my laptop, working into the late hours, setting everything in order.

A lesson I learned along the way is that anything is possible, even if you or no one in your family has walked the path before. If you have the vision, will, determination, and persistence and apply this towards a goal, the right people and resources will always be made available to you. Fear is an illusion that is a vast limitation.

Do not let fear hold you back. If I could do it, you could too.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The reason I have not left San Diego is because of its variety, beauty, and beautiful weather! I love that there is something for everyone in this city. I find myself going from the beach to the mountains throughout the year. I love all our farmers markets. My favorites are Little Italy, Hillcrest, and La Jolla. Seeing the various small business owners and vendors sell their products which they poured their heart into, always fills me with joy. The beaches are also a must, with my favorites being Coronado, La Jolla, Ocean Beach, and all the hidden gems along the way.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Being a first generation Latina college and law school graduate, and attorney, I would not have been able to make it this far without the support of both my parents who taught me that hard work, determination, persistence, and integrity go a long ways. My father passed away when I was 14 years old, but I still hold true to my heart the sacrifices he and my mother made for me to be where I am today. I am also extremely grateful for the various individuals that have helped me on my journey in each phase of my life. There are too many to name, but these earth angels have appeared to provide strong encouragement and even a helping hand from when I was a teenager after my father’s passing, to present day. I’ve had friends from the tennis community help me get into college and then provide financial assistance for education materials, then others who provided mentorship just as I was applying for law school, and then thereafter, colleagues within the legal community who gave me various tips on how to open my own business, and more. To present date, I feel extremely fortunate to be surrounded by great colleagues whom I can lean on if I have a question.
