We had the good fortune of connecting with Cassady Blake-Christo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cassady, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started Curb Appeal South Bay by recognizing a solution to a problem: getting Trash Cans out to the curb on time and wheeling them back in once they’ve been collected. Living in a suburb of Los Angeles, my neighbors and I are stacked pretty close together, so that means the streets are packed with trash cans at least two days a week. This means theres little to no room to park your car and with everybody’s busy work schedule, if your cans are left out then they are open to others filling up your bins with trash and debris before you get the chance to bring them back in.

My business is not only out to help those who may be too busy to bring their bins in and out, I also started my business to serve those who may not be as mobile as they once were and by wheeling their trash cans in and out every week, we can check one more thing off their busy to-do list.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
With a background in Animation, my path to starting a trash service business wasn’t exactly a straight forward course. I would say that becoming a business owner came from three directions. One, wanting to work for myself in a way that provided a steady income and work life balance. Two, it came out of spending the last two years working freelance while applying to jobs at a nonstop pace that was burning me out. And three, wanting to serve the community in which I call home. So from these things, I decided I was going to make it happen for myself and founded Curb Appeal South Bay.

For anybody who may not know (and I was one of them), starting a company can be hard, but the true challenge is continuing to run your company day to day with new challenges popping up that you had no idea about. So to say it was not easy is an understatement. I am constantly learning what to do and what not to do. From where and how I should be advertising, to balancing business expenses, it is all a learning process that never stops. I think the way to handle something new like this is to be open to change and listen to what others have to say with their advice, but also don’t be afraid to listen to yourself and do what feels right. As a new business owner, at the end of the day you are now answering to yourself, so be confident in your decisions, take your shots, see what sticks and go from there. Essentially, don’t be afraid to fail.

I think what I want people to know about my business is simple: “Let us check one more thing off your to-do list”.
We are a Trash Can to Curb Service. Whether you don’t have the time because your work/life schedule is hectic or your ability to wheel your trash cans out to the curb and back has become limited, let us take care of it. I know we’re all insanely busy and with the uncertainty of the times we live in, knowing you can count on a small business like Curb Appeal South Bay to take care of a weekly needed service, can hopefully give you some assurance.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start off in my home town of Manhattan Beach. I recommend going downtown for a bite to eat at Hennessys and then take a stroll down to the pier to take in the sights of the surfers, local beach goers, and maybe rent a bike and coast up and down the strand along the sand.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The biggest support system I had in starting my business came from my family and friends. From figuring out the name of the company, to business advice, to the logo and branding, my family and friends have all been with me to help navigate this new journey as a first time business owner. The great thing too is that their support is always there when I need it, giving fresh perspectives and outside the box thinking.
