We had the good fortune of connecting with Caroline Sowers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caroline, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I fell in love with performing when I was about 5 years old, and my love for it has continued to grow ever since. I am choosing to pursue ballet as a career so that I can spend my life performing! Ballet brings me so much joy; it is truly my passion. I want nothing more than to dance 8 hours a day and hopefully have the chance to dance my dream roles in a professional ballet company.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been training pre-professionally in ballet since I was 7 years old, but this past year has been one of the most challenging years of my life due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I was forced to try and stay in shape while taking Zoom ballet class in my bedroom, and it was extremely disheartening to have my performances and summer programs canceled. When I was finally able to come back to the studio after many months, it was tough to adjust to changes in the way my body responded while dancing. But with lots of determination, I was able to perform on stage again for the first time in a full year while competing in the Youth America Grand Prix ballet competition this February. I received top 3 in both Classical and Contemporary, and I was invited to the finals where I received a year-round scholarship opportunity to Colorado Ballet Academy! This summer I will also be attending the School of Pennsylvania Ballet summer intensive on full scholarship. I am so grateful that I was able to persevere through a global pandemic and continue to improve and grow as an artist. I cannot wait for what lies ahead!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The first place in San Diego I would take a friend would be the beach. There’s not much that’s more fun than spending a Monday swimming in the ocean and laying on the sand! The next day, we would get acai bowls and avocado toast at Better Buzz Coffee, and then spend the afternoon shopping at Fashion Valley mall and grabbing dinner at Poki One N Half. On Wednesday, we would get up early and enjoy a day at the San Diego Zoo! Thursday, we would ride our bikes around Lake Murray and end the day with a delicious sushi dinner at one of the many great sushi restaurants in San Diego. We would end the week on Friday by going to see a ballet performance by City Ballet of San Diego!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
San Diego Academy of Ballet, where I trained for the last 10 years.
