We had the good fortune of connecting with Caroline Poe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caroline, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in San Diego! I have so much pride and love for America’s Finest City. I was what we called “creatively homeschooled”. Since we were fortunate enough to be so creative with our time, my parents took myself and my two older brothers on “field trips” all around the world. The first place I visited overseas (besides Mexico), was Israel at just 9-years-old. My love for travel started very young. What exposure! I still remember so much about that trip and treasure all the amazing trips I went on with my family. Being exposed to a wide variety of cultures and places really shaped my curiosity and excitement for the world! All the while having a strong family identity. How lucky that whenever we left, we got to return to the sway of palm trees in the Pacific Ocean breeze?! These experiences really shaped my desire to live life colorfully. But there is nothing quite like the feeling of home. I received my education from many places around San Diego County. I was involved in a co-op, participated in Christian Youth Theater, took art classes at Watts Atelier and when I turned 15, attended Community Colleges to explore different areas of study. I became fluent in American Sign Language at Cuyamaca, explored Culinary Arts at Grossmont, and danced and attended the Interpreting for the Deaf program at Mesa. I cherish all these moments where I was able to explore what my mind and body was capable of. Everyday, I hope to remind myself never to lose the childlike wonder of learning. Whether that is through travel, through taking a class, through a book, or from another human being.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Through my love of art, my creativity grew and so did my perceptiveness as an artist. Over time, this creativity transitioned from watercolors and brushstrokes to the universal art form that is fashion. I believe that fashion is one of the most important expressions of art, for it is both function and form melded together to give each of us a voice. Fashion can truly be a unique expression of self. And so can writing. So together, with my blog www.colormyuniverse.com, I have an outlet to express different things I consider in my daily life, share fun outfits and share special places with others. It’s where I don’t keep what I learn to myself. It is a place of authenticity and honesty. It’s something that is mine. I get to make it what I want. I believe it’s important that everyone has an outlet like this – because there is so much more to us than our 9 to 5. We are all multidimensional with many thoughts, interests, talents and desires. I would love to create a space where people can come together and consider different topics. Where we can bring all of our brush strokes together and paint this canvas called life! Here are a few titles of my blog posts, so you might get a taste of what I write about: “Accepting Instead of Expecting”, “Common Dating Misconception: You Wasted My Time!”, and “The Truth About Lying”.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Choosing just a few places to recommend in San Diego is so hard for me! I have recommendations for every neighborhood depending on what you hope to do. Here are a few things I love to do on Saturdays in San Diego:
Grab a Best Drink Ever at Better Buzz. Locations throughout the county!
Hike Torrey Pines
Cardio Hip Hop class at Culture Shock Dance Center
Brunch at Miss B’s Coconut Club
Visit The San Diego Watercolor Society at Liberty Station to view the latest paintings. Then walk around Point Loma.
Share Cioppino at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse.
Dinner at Bali Hai. The best view of San Diego with the most delicious Ahi Tuna and the strongest Mai Tai you’ll ever have!
Let loose at Booty Bassment night at Whistle Stop Bar in South Park!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am very close with my family and I love each and every one of them so much! I am so grateful for them. I am grateful to have such an amazing foundation and support system. I also want to mention Life Skills, a program that really allowed me to review my life and become unstuck in my communication. While I’ve experienced many great things in life, I didn’t always know how to communicate my thoughts, feelings or needs through them all. Life Skills really helped me learn that I have a right to all my feelings and I can communicate well under all circumstances. I learned skills and options on how to navigate this life. (https://sandiegolifeskills.com/) I continue to learn and grow each and every day.
