We had the good fortune of connecting with Brianne Day and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brianne, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I’ve had my business going since 2016. The 1st 4-5 years it was very nose to the grindstone, push yourself, do what you can to have a thriving business. Now that I’m into year 8 and my business has been surviving and doing well the balance has changed in the regard too I take more weekends off for vacation time. I also put more of a limit on the amount of orders and weddings I take during the week/weekends to keep balance. I think about balance with my mental and physical state, being very aware they’re both in good standing. If my mental state starts to decline, changes need to happen. Same thing with my physicality, if my body is operating poorly I need to adjust how I’m working and be more conscious. Spending time with my loved ones and friends is also a big part, making sure the business is not completely monopolizing all my time.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I run a small micro baking business in south Tacoma. I’m not a retail shop but a WSDA licensed commercial kitchen. All items are pre ordered ahead of time. I also provide to businesses around the Pierce county area with my product. Not really sure what sets me apart from anyone else to be honest haha! I offer a wide variety of items and making anything from small birthday cakes to large wedding orders.

I’ve been professionally baking over 15 years now and it’s something I’m very passionate about. I’ve worked in restaurants, wholesale bakeries, and small independent bakeries. I went into business for myself. After the last bakery, I worked at the owner, decided to retire, and my mother encouraged me to start my own business..

I don’t think anything comes easy, I think you have to put in the time and passion for what you love to do. I’ve had to over come adversity, people questioning my ability if I could been bake and if I was any good. Customers rolling their eyes at prices. What I’ve learned and how I got over that hurdle is you have to stand your ground and know your self worth. I do at times have moments of questioning myself that will always happen but I remind myself I’ve worked hard and I won’t be pushed around by anyone. You have to stand firm and believe in what you’re doing, the right people will respect that and support your business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The troll in Seattle is a must! Also going for a walk along Alki Beach or Point Ruston is beautiful. Also Snoqualmie Falls is a stunning area.

Eat and drink would definitely visit: The Pink Door, The Church Cantina, Naomi Joe, Boom Boom Room, Indo Street Eatery. Theres so many great places it’s hard to name them all! Would definitely fit in a trip to Portland and to the best coffee shop ever(in my opinion) Tov Coffee.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother was the one that encouraged me to open the business against which I was not on board with right away:)

The support of my partner and friends have been huge and the Tacoma community is big and active about supporting and showing up for their small businesses. I proud to be a part of Tacoma! Also I have some great baker friends who help me with any business advice I need or just venting too when times are rough and frustrating
