Meet Brianna Murphy | Salon Owner and Hairstylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brianna Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brianna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My original thought process came when I was thinking about going to beauty school. I wanted to have a business plan and a bigger picture of what my career in the industry would look like. Fast forward years later, I was searching for something more. Was my original business plan still a possibility? I had put my passion aside to achieve other goals and craved the spark I would get from being behind the chair. I toured the Sola Salon suites to see what the concept was about and just took the leap of faith in opening my own salon.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Not only am I am business owner, I also work behind the chair. I love the dynamic and energy we have created in the salon and I couldn’t have done it without the girls I work along side with. We created a fun family rapport that resonates to our clients as well and I am not only thankful, but so proud of that. The journey wasn’t easy but I also feel that makes it more rewarding. Not only do you embrace the struggle or challenges, but you get to celebrate the benefits. I have learned no one may have your same dream or hustle and that’s ok. My brand was built years ago before I even knew it and it came from the faith my nana had in me. I love the positivity that exudes from the salon, the talent that sparks in our space and the beauty that leaves the salon.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Little Italy is great! We love having salon happy hours at Queenstown. We schedule salon outing every other month to step away from the salon and let loose and have fun. So when we have friends in town we typically give them some royal treatment at the salon and set out to enjoy dinner at Zinque or Barbusa. Walking around Little Italy and stopping for a quick drink along the way. Sunset Cliffs or walking around the beaches of Coronado are always a must! San Diego is the mecca of fun restaurants and adventures.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It is crazy to do an impulsive move like opening a salon without clientele! Telling my mom my decision she tried to reason with me, but knew at the end of the day if I am passionate about something I usually go all in and achieve it. This journey wasn’t easy, but without my mom thinking positive and being my emotional cheerleader on the sidelines I would have thrown away the blowdryer and gone back to my comfort zone. She never said running a business would be easy, but she believed in me and knew it would be worth it. I know I can always run to her to vent and be an outside perspective, and for that I am forever grateful.
