Meet Brian Maiz | House Music and Techno DJ

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Maiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I feel consistency in effort is the most important aspect in my success. This applies to all aspects of my life. Whether I’m playing a show, working, doing a podcast or meeting new people. I try to give maximum attention to the task at hand and am constantly working to better my craft. It’s all the hours you don’t see scouring for new music, practicing, taking risks that all make it come together.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So my art encompasses a couple different avenues. My main one is djing and I feel it’s my job to differentiate myself from others. To bring new soundscapes in order to paint a musical picture or vibe for the night. Each gig provides a new opportunity to showcase your skills. It can call for straight up night of all banging tunes or opening the night and setting the tone for the evening. It takes the ability to read rooms and take people where you want to go.
The second is on the production side. While not where I spend most of my time these days, is still fun to dabble in. I currently have a remix out on vinyl of Vagabundo Club Social’s tune Angayusa. They’re a funky duo out of Columbia and the remix was done by myself and good friend and label owner Sleazy McQueen. You can check it out here.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If we’re talking strictly from a musical standpoint, I’d start with Dance Klassique which is San Diego’s longest running house music night and happens every Wednesday at Office Bar in North Park. Friday Nights we’d hit up House Music Fridays at the AC Lounge where Matthew Brian and crew bring in stellar talent each week. On the weekends, there is always something going on from Souleil at Gossip Grill, West Coast Weekender doing something at Quartyard plus various other events and undergrounds happening. The great thing about this city is that there is so much to offer and every weekend has something different.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by so many like minded individuals over the years. The friends I started out playing with back in the day are still at it and we get together from time to time just to throw down and have a good time and keep pushing each other. I’ve also have to give a shout out to all those in the DanceGruv Radio Family. The love and respect for all the Dj’s there who are spread across the globe is awesome. That plus the platform itself for giving us the opportunity to share to a broader audience. Check it out for yourself. www.dancegruv.net
