Meet Brian Altman | Recording Studio Owner and Music Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Altman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, how do you think about risk?
I believe that risk taking is the core of what makes life exciting. I’m not just referring to my current business choices – you have to take risks to date, to travel, or do anything outside of your comfort zone. I take a hard stance against using fear-based reasoning to justify any decisions. I choose to live be these words: “always be willing to bet on yourself”. If there’s a risk to be taken and the risk magnitude is affected primarily my my own efforts, then I choose to bet on myself every time.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a full time audio/video professional who also owns a commercial recording studio. I have never been able to successfully “niche”. I love and excel at too many things, I don’t ever want to be in a position where I become bored or feel creatively restricted. I’ll stick to audio for this question though. Aside from being skilled at audio engineering, I take great pride in being an educator for my clients and leads. I have observed a lot of predatory and/or low-effort behavior in this field. I have chosen to differentiate myself by being the ultimate teacher and motivational coach for my clients. I give all of my knowledge away for free to whoever asks. I want my clients – my friends – to be successful, so I go above and beyond however I can to help them achieve that success.
I have made many sacrifices to get where I am today. I left a six-figure career in finance to pursue audio full time. I sold my house in the middle of Covid to build a commercial recording studio. So many people told me not to do it. I have been burned and betrayed by many close friends throughout the course of my professional audio career. I overcame and faced these challenges and risks by always choosing to believe in my own power to grow and improve. I don’t have a plan B – either I succeed or I am homeless and broke. That makes things simple for me: I HAVE to win.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am SO the wrong person to ask. Where I am in life currently doesn’t allow for a lot of this. I work 60+ hours per week and I’m a single dad of two teenagers. If I were looking to keep a friend busy for a week, I’d have to call some other friends to help me come up with a plan.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There have been many people whose love and support have contributed to my success, but without my adopted parents, Clarence and Sue Lewis, I would not be where I am today. Before my divorce they were my in-laws, but even now, 10 years later, I still call them mom and dad. When I hit my most difficult points they helped and supported me in the ways I needed most. They’ve never asked for anything in return, never complained or judged me – they have always just supported and guided me with love and patience. I will always credit all of my success to their love and support.
