We had the good fortune of connecting with Brenda Buenrostro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brenda, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I used to be a HUGE workaholic, I worked 6 days a week and my one day off I would be looking up new color trends online. Which was great for a few years but then it became exhausting, I felt like I was trying to give my career my all but couldn’t because I was so tired. I had a bit of a health scare a few years ago, which was a huge wake up call to put myself first. I cut my schedule to 4 days a week, I started meditating, going on nature walks with my dogs and my boyfriend. It’s the little things that help me find that balance in life and continue to love and thrive in my career.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve been doing hair for 8 years now, I think what sets me apart from others is that even though I’ve been in the industry for this long, I still treat it like I’m brand new. I’m still eager to learn new trends and techniques, when you sit in my chair I LISTEN to your hair and personal concerns, my guest aren’t just another “customer” they’ve chosen me and I want to do everything in my power to make their experience the best salon experience they’ve had.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It would be a total treat yourself day! I would take my bff to Torrey Pines for a quick hike, then we would probably go to Sidecar Donuts for coffee and a sugary donut, go shopping at Fashion Valley, get a mani pedi at Tippy Toes in Hillcrest, and we would finish our day by grabbing dinner at Nishiki for some delicious ramen.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would say that my success is all thanks to my amazing support system. My parents have always believed in me and have encouraged me to reach my goals. When I decided I wanted to drop out of college and pursue a career in cosmetology, I was so nervous to tell my parents but they were supportive and my mom actually went with me to tour different cosmetology schools so I could choose the right one for me. My boyfriend who has helped me build my brand and backed up all my crazy ideas. I wouldn’t be where I’m at without them.
