We had the good fortune of connecting with Blake Gantney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Blake, can you tell us about an impactful book you’ve read and why you liked it or what impact it had on you?
Of all the books I have read over the years, one still clearly stands above the rest. Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell is by far my favorite, and has directly impacted my day to day life far more then any other book. It drastically changed how I approached both my personal and professional interactions. The book talks about our about our ability to use limited information from a very narrow period of experience to come to decisive conclusions, and these spontaneous decisions are often as good as—or even better than—carefully planned ones. After reading this book I started creating exercises to better train my subconscious and keeping tabs on when it was right vs. wrong. Over time I figured out which types of scenarios I could have fully trust in my subconscious, and which ones were better suited to full rational thought process.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my company Chomp Creative Studio with my business partner Al Reyes back in 2013. We started our company because we identified what we thought was a large hole in the market. There were plenty of other video production companies around, but all that we had seen were purely focused on the creative side. We created Chomp Creative Studio to to bridge the gap in video production and strategic marketing. We focus on creating videos to achieve specific strategic marketing objectives. We don’t just create a video to “look nice”. We work with our clients to clearly understand their marketing objectives, and then specifically craft a video style and message that will dive that marketing objective directly. Then when the video is complete, we don’t just hand it off to the client and say good luck! We create digital media campaigns to drive video views, or traffic to a landing page to generate the conversions the client is looking for.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would start off with some surfing most likely in Pacific Beach or Del Mar, so after we could get sandwiches for Board and Brew. The next day we would do some brewery hopping in downtown and North Park, concluding with some Pho from Shank and Bone. The next day we would go rock climbing and then head out the Barona or Viejas casino for some entertainment and buffet. On any other days we had left we would make sure to go to Morley Field in Balboa Park for some disk golf, and probably check out the Zoo as well.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give my shoutout to Bernhard Schroeder. He was my SDSU professor and mentor that really helped me get my career started. I always had him to talk to and provide his guidance whenever it was needed.
