We had the good fortune of connecting with Bill Byrne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Remedy has a unique take on the public relations industry.

At our core, we’re creatively driven with a focus on what’s realistic in the modern PR space.

We probably lose more business by explaining to potential partners what the modern PR landscape looks like and where their brand can fit or grow into if the effort is there.

Too often brands think they deserve more earned media attention than they’re receiving because they have a fishbowl mentality to their marketing. They fail to have a media-first perspective in terms of what editorial is looking for. Or their expectations are based on outdated knowledge. What worked in PR last year may not work tomorrow. What worked last month may not deliver.

Often a brand will come to us disappointed in their current PR team. While the Remedy crew is nothing short of experts, often we’ll audit their results and determine it’s not the previous PR team’s fault, except that expectations weren’t managed or, and this happens a lot, their existing team was actually providing a fantastic value for what they were charging. The client just wanted more.

We must be doing something right at Remedy PR. In the last five years we’ve had a lot of partners land tier-A PR coverage well ahead of their competitors. We’ve won awards for PR, but more importantly, our partners have won awards for activations in the ski and snowboard space, the outdoor industry, the mortgage and housing industry, as well as consumer tech. Seeing your partners come home with hardware from Outdoor Retailer or CES is icing on the cake.

I have to think our refreshing and realistic take on PR is resonating. In the last few years I’ve been asked to speak by the PRSA in New York on emerging media and podcasts, and PR industry media outlets, such as Muck Rack and Bulldog Reporter, have asked for me to chime in on topics.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
You’re going to make me choose a best friend! I don’t want to choose a favorite, but here’s what I’m loving.

If they skate, I’ll take them to the Linda Vista skatepark early in the morning. It’s so big and diverse that it looks like it’s out of a video game. If they don’t skate, not, maybe surf somewhere between LaJolla and Cardiff. Otherwise, an early morning gym session with the folks at Performance 360. Follow any of those with a “double lap” jog around the Fiesta Island Dog Park with our pooch Ollie. A SUP trip to Barefoot bar on Mission Bay, or if they’re adventurous, SUP to OB, would be a great morning excursion too.

Mid-afternoon I really enjoy riding bikes with my family from PB to OB to get food. Pizza Port which has gluten-free crust and non-dairy cheese options (approved by my wife, www.instagram.com/megshealthyouniverse/), is a favorite.

I love the beach, but there’s a lot of great things east of the Five too.

Dirty Birds has a lot of great locations, and while their original spot is in Pacific Beach, the Liberty Station one is a great one to take visitors from out of town to because they’re so much going on there. But if we’re sticking in PB, Bareback has one of the best burgers in the game. Amplified Aleworks is another great spot to check out by the boardwalk, with a large outdoor area and tons of gluten-reduced beer they brew themselves.

Catching a sunset on Mission Bay with a bonfire, or hiking Torrey Pines is a very California thing to do too. I know a lot of my neighbors in PB, so a casual stroller push with our daughter and have beers on our friends’ driveways is usually how a lot of the evenings kick end.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If I listed them all I’d take up your entire day. But in the last couple of years a few people have been very generous with their time and network, so I’ll start with them.

Ricardo Camargo of Vapor Studio, Steve Price and BJ Cook of 85Sixty, Ryan Berman of Courage Brands, Charlie Ninegar of Nixon, Nick Adcock of Australis Advisors, who made the intro and brought us into the Global Brands Group family, Chad Mihalick at Malakye, and David Oates of PR Security have all been proactively unselfish with their time, referrals, and lending an ear.

On the book-side, Trust Me, I’m Lying is a great one to help get marketing brains moving, and The Subtle Art Of Not Giving a F*CK is a great entryway into stoicism. Most of the things Scott Stratten has been recorded saying should be textbook for people working in marketing.
