We had the good fortune of connecting with Beth and Court of Life with Beth and Court and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beth and Court, what is the most important factor behind your success?
This may feel “buzz wordy” but our brand is built on genuine connection. We answer every DM, we interact in our own comments, we take time to get to know our followers, we talk about taboo topics to normalize them, we compassionately stand in our truth, we speak to causes that align with us, and we make business decisions that feel right for us – even if it’s in direct contrast to typical business advice.
We started out trying to follow the advice of all the successful brands and entrepreneurs who have gone before us and it just felt so misaligned. Everything felt like a battle; everything felt exhausting; everything felt like it wasn’t true to us but something we “had” to do.
Once we let go of that and did what felt right to us, our followers spoke up about how much they love that about us. There’s no point in growing a business if you hate the journey. So we learned to embrace what we love about the journey and let the rest sort itself out.
We know we could grow quicker, but we like it here – a slow, steady growth with followers who we adore and feel a genuine connection with.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re a married couple in our 30’s and started Life with Beth and Court as a content creation business to teach and show people what it’s like to live and work in an RV full-time. It started out as a DIY channel when we owned our first house together, but in 2020 when we gave up the traditional stationary lifestyle, the world was super curious to see what our new lifestyle would be like.
We get dozens of messages from people telling us that we’re living the lifestyle of their dreams – which is an awesome place to start. From there, we use our platform to show people that if this is really the lifestyle they want to live, we can show them the ins and outs as we’re learning too.
That’s the piece that sets us apart…that we’re learning too. We know we don’t know everything there is about RV’s and tips and tricks and travel, but that’s the fun part! We get to learn alongside our audience and make it a safe place for others to learn too. We don’t like when beginners are shamed, in any area of life, when they’re just starting out and trying to learn.
Another thing that sets us apart is that we love to show the things that DON’T go how they’re supposed to. We’re not looking to be perfect – that isn’t very fun for anyone; we’re honest about the good, the bad, and the ugly that comes with this lifestyle. So the footage that other content creators might cut out, we leave in! Like when we unhooked our trailer improperly the first time and it rolled at us, or when we had to figure out how to use our generator for the first time at 11:00pm in swarms of mosquitos. These are the things people love to learn through.
The biggest challenge we hit with our business was figuring out where we fit. We started out following business coaches but quickly realized we didn’t have a product or service to sell. Then we tried following just YouTubers, but knew there was more to our business.
We finally realized – surprise, surprise – that we don’t “fit”. We were never meant to fit. So we started paving our own way and slowly started finding others in the same arena as us.
Now we feel like we finally hit our groove identifying as “content creators” and once we hit our stride, everything just became so much more fun! We love creating content together for others to enjoy.
What we love about our brand is that we cover different topics on different platforms. Yes, we know – the business advice is to niche down and let your audience know what to expect from you – and we do. But we differentiate our platforms so you get different content depending on the platform you follow us on.
Right now, TikTok is our cute couple content; Reels is where we feature RV-related trendy content; YouTube is longer video content that shows a more holistic picture of our journey and travels; our podcast is where we dive into serious topics and normalize the uncomfortable conversations.
Humans are multi-faceted and complex. We’re not either funny or serious, goofy or introspective, happy or struggling – we’re “and”. We can be funny AND serious, goofy AND introspective, happy AND struggling, and that’s what our brand shows too. Our brand is about the real experience of life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We loved visiting San Diego for the amazing breakfast joints, like Fig Tree Cafe and Chiefy Cafe, and of course the famous San Diego Zoo and Botanical Gardens. So beautiful!
Palm Springs has an awesome aerial tram experience that takes you from 75 and hot desert sands up to 45 degrees and snowing in the mountain tops! It’s not just a scenic ride on the tram though, you get out at the top and are standing in a state park. What a fun experience.
And no visit to anywhere would be complete without tacos, so we’d take our best friend to Loco Charlie’s in Palm Springs for some amazing tacos, or Blue Coyote Bar & Grill in Palm Springs for amazing Mexican cuisines and the best margaritas you’ll ever have.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our Behind-the-Scenes members deserve a massive shoutout. We did a lot of things backwards in our journey but this loyal group has been with us (and growing) since the earliest days of Life with Beth and Court.
This group started out paying $10-$15/mo just to support our dreams and show us love as we tried to make a content creation business flourish. They followed us from Patreon to Facebook and now to Instagram as we tried to find the platform that worked best; they followed us from tiered pricing with different reward levels to singular pricing with the same rewards; they stuck with us from our earliest attempts at behind-the-scenes content creation all the way to our current format.
They’ve backed us emotionally and financially through thick and thin and every change in between – and they continue to vow the same allegiance today as they did on day 1. It’s the most incredible network of support we could ever hope for and we are so grateful to them. Not only do they stick with us as we figure this business out but they cheer us on for being true to ourselves and what feels right.
We go live to talk with them twice a month and those are easily our favorite days.
We recognize now that we technically should’ve grown our channels and social accounts first, then started a paid membership, but we wouldn’t change it for the world. We did what was right for us and it yielded this incredibly tight-knit group that we wouldn’t trade for anything.
