Meet Barney Smith | Cartoonist, Author, and Podcaster

We had the good fortune of connecting with Barney Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Barney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I created Storycomic initially as a publishing house for my own work, but as I connected with more artists and authors, I realized that there are many creatives who have great work to share and great advice to give.
What started out as an occasional Livestream platform to chat with my industry peers has turned into an acclaimed and internationally received podcast which has been streamed in over 50 countries. I have close to 250 episodes recorded so far.
It has been a delightful journey and I am grateful to make such great connections.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As I have grown older and have an 8-year-old daughter, and 6-year-old daughter, and a 2-year-old son, my style of storytelling has changed along with my interests. the unfiltered and seemingly endless well of innocent imagination has greatly inspired me. I tend to gravitate toward identifying collaborators and guests that also have the same passion for creating fun stories in exciting worlds.
I find this the most sustainable way of continuing my show is actively connecting with people who have great stories to tell and giving them a platform to talk about them.
I am proud that I am able to make people feel comfortable and have genuine conversations.
One of my colleagues at another podcast considered me like the ‘Mr Rogers’ of artists and authors podcasts because I make my guests feel like they are the only ones in the room. That was a good compliment that I am happy to hear.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Here in Vermont, there is a lot of great places to visit. For the foodies, there is Ben and Jerry’s factory tour, the Cabot Cheese Factory tour, and a plethora of Maple Syrup Sugar houses that provide tours. There are thousands of miles of hiking trails for the outdoorsy folks, and some of the best skiing is in Vermont too.
For those that lean more toward the arts, almost every town has an art gallery or museum, and a tourist can quickly fill up their day touring galleries and art studios.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife for supporting me and to my kids for being such an inspiration.
