We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Lanzarotto and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Oh this question I definitely love. It brings me back to the moment that I knew I wanted to pursue photography! I always dreamt about starting my own business – but inside me I was to scared to take the jump, I was always known as an introvert at least to myself and that is the excuse I told myself. In 2019 my sister got married and that day I was watching her photographer and was amazed! She was doing something that I have always loved and enjoyed doing. At the end of the night I knew I wasn’t happy with where my life was in that moment and I knew something needed to change. I needed that excitement every day and the sense of fulfillment. So I picked up my DSLR and never looked back. So you ask what was my thought process behind starting my own business. My thought process was being able to do something that I loved doing that would never feel like a job. Creating beautiful images that people would love, showing them the photos I’ve taken and to be able to show them how beautiful they are through my lens and giving them a reason to love themselves to as small as taking a location that doesn’t look “photo worthy” and creating something amazing! Being able to interact and build relationships that I never would have came across without taking that chance to build this beautiful business I’ve created. Being able to have the freedom to create my own schedule and being with my family more and having the ability to share moments with my daughter that I was not able to have when I was working for someone else.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Ohhhh this is such a great question! I think what sets me apart from others is that I am such a goofy photographer! I will make a fool of myself in order to get my beautiful clients to look their best. Even if that means I am saying something crazy, or laughing super loud behind my camera! I always put my clients before myself because I know I would want the same if it was the other way around! I also tend to be that crazy photographer that will cheer you on when you put something on social media or send you a random text just to ask how you are, or even go for lunch way after we’ve worked together! I think that’s what sets me apart the most! I love my clients like they are apart of my family! I am most proud of the way I have built my business and that is always with the client in mind because I always strive to serve them with genuine interaction! The lessons I’ve learned along the way is community over competition, we live in such huge community that there is room for all of us and if we are all kind to each other then we will all win together and once we win together we will have lots of people around of cheering us on! Lastly, nothing in life comes easy. I know that if you want something to bad than you definitely need to work hard to achieve your dream! And it will be tough but if you keep pushing and keep going you will reap the benefits and all your hard work and determination will pay off!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This questions hits close to home because I am a MAJOR foodie! I love food, weekend getaways and all the things! If my friend was visiting San Diego I would first start with taking them to eat Tacos at Tacos El Gordo (Because hey, no one can go wrong with delicious tacos!). Than after we filled out belly’s I would take them to all the spots such as Balboa Park, Liberty Station, the beach to watch that San Diego sunset! Than I would take them to the Packing District in Anaheim, than head up to LA and take them to the Hollywood sign and to Santa Monica Pier. We would spend the rest of our days eating in Little Italy, going on one of San Diego’s Beautiful hikes, or walking around Seaport Village!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh where do I begin!! I love this question because I know that I would not be where I am at today if it wasn’t because the meaning behind this question. My family and friends 1,000 percent! They have supported me since the beginning, since this business was just a thought in my head. They have been my rock and pushed me to always to continue pushing toward my goal and to never give up! They have taught me to look back and to be thankful for where I came from and to be grateful to where I am today, this moment in life. I could not have accomplished this without them. And I am forever blessed because God placed these people in my life. Also, I want to give some credit to the amazing online courses I have invested in with some amazing photographers that are absolutely amazing at what they do such as AMY AND JORDAN DEMOS, KATELYN JAMES, SAMANTHA GRANT! They have such incredible ways to teach their students that are newer photographers!
