We had the good fortune of connecting with Ash Norrington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ash, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
I think the thing that may surprise people who don’t work in music is the amount of time and money that it takes to make a song. Even when you hear only one person performing, it’s likely that there is a group of people behind the record. And everything that goes into that record and everything needed to put the music out costs money.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I make hip-hop/soul music. What sets me apart from others is my blend of witty lyricism and layered melodies and musicality. I am proud to be versatile and have an ear and experience to be able to bring a project to life from production, arrangement, writing, mixing and mastering all the way to distribution and promotion. To get to where I am today, I had to build relationships in the local industry and globally, despite the limitations posed by COVID 19. I had to learn a lot about how to produce and promote my music at the level I am able to today. I spent countless hours on Youtube and constantly looking to learn new mixing techniques.

I have to say IT WAS NOT EASY. I have received a lot of rejection, felt like quitting more than I care to remember and have had to balance this passion with taking care of day to day responsibilities. So, it’s been hard.

Through it all, I’ve learned that you have to earn the people’s interest and you have to find a way to balance wanting to give the people something constantly vs wanting to give them something of the highest quality. I’ve learned to be kind to people and to put good will and karma out there and that it will come back to you.

I want the world to know that I care. I care about people. I care about good music.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Balboa Park, then to North Park. I’d probably take them to Raised By Wolves, then to see a hip hop show in Ocean Beach. We’d definitely grab some tacos: Probably hit up Valeries taco stand and walk by Oceanside beach

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank the people in my life that introduced me to and kept me around music. My mom and stepdad and my father and uncles always kept me in touch with culture by playing me music, investing into my interests and showing me that it was possible to enjoy what you do and get compensated for bringing people happiness through art.
